General MLS Discussion

Also interesting to note that New England set the points record last night at 73. They have a goal differential of +25.

When LAFC set the old record at 72, they had a goal differential of +48.

LAFC were definitely the more flashy team, but this NE team has taught me that you don't need to blow teams out every week to be the best team in the league. And I think one difference which actually makes me think NE might have a great shot at MLS cup, is the fact that they're so good at coming back from behind and they keep their heads in the game even when some teams would spiral out of control *cough* LAFC *cough*

Exactly. We lost 3-2 at RBA (late McNamara equalizer, won 2-0 at YS, lost 2-1 at NE (red card to NYC). New England wins at the margins.

The question is whether winning at the margins is sustainable in a single elimination playoff. We shall see.
It's not just the winning at margins, but the winning at margins while also coming back from being down / tied. I think they have the mentality to do so, though supporter shield winner voodoo has something to say here too heh

I have been thinking all season long that NER would eventually have the wheels fall off because all they could do was win at the margins and eventually due to regular variance it would swing back in the other direction. But the other shoe hasn’t dropped over the 34 game season and they have the single season points record with 2 games to go. I have a hard time believing anything changes due to it being a sudden death situation.

New England is ripe for the picking in the playoffs. Especially in a one-game knockout scenario.

(They only have one game left fwiw)

Orlando v. Nashville. For whom do we root?

A tie, maybe?

Orlando win. We need Nashville to only get at most 1 point over their next 2 matches (today at Orlando, Decision Day vs. Red Bulls) (and if we win vs. Philadelphia) to claim the 2 seed. So I'll be rooting for Orlando today and Red Bulls on Decision Day.

A draw would be best. A draw leaves a win against Philly and we secure the 2 seed with a loss from Nashville.

It also only gives Orlando 1 point, so then a draw against Philly still leaves NYCFC ahead of Orlando, even if they win their last match.

An Orlando win would also be nice.

Nashville play Decision Day at home vs. Red Bulls. They've never lost at home this season.

EDIT: Allen Chapman with an extremely controversial video review decision to overturn the Orlando goal in the final seconds of added time.

PRO referees are equal opportunity offenders. At least we can give them that.

Stupidly pointless musings, but:

If Montreal beat Houston, that puts them on 46 points.
This means #8 will be on 46 points.
The max # of minimum points would be:
ATL vs RB tie (48 for ATL, 47 for RB) (you can also put RB beating ATL here which leads to the same result except 51 for RB and 50 for ATL after)
RB beats nashville (50 for RB)
ATL beats Cinci (51 for ATL)

Which leaves Montreal vs Orlando.
Montreal on 46, Orlando on 48.
A Montreal win would see Montreal move to 49 points, and in this case we'd have NE, (NA,PHI,NYC), (RB,ATL), MTL, | ORL.
So for the first time in MLS history we'd see a team on 48 points in 8th place. which retroactively would be playoffs in previous seasons. (closest was vancouver with 47 two years ago).
The western conference also has the possibility to make this, but I don't feel like doing their maths.

Seems like at the moment, the "magic number" for playoffs with 7th seed as bottom is 49 points, as there are no scenarios i can come up with where east ends up with 49 points in 8th place, this year, and thus 49 holds true. (48 holds true too, if the above very specific scenarios don't play out lol)
