General MLS Discussion

Austin just signed Alex Ring to a 2-yr extension (then 2 option years).

As a designated player.

Kind of makes you wonder about Claudio's decision-making. Ring is a great D-mid, but a DP D-mid? I don't know about that. Maybe Claudio wasn't as good a sporting director here as we thought at the time.

im starting to get this feeling as well, since last year after we got santi talles and thiago. coach wanted new players and they got them. and this year making maxi tam level signing and more flexibility with DP's.

but tbf i also read on reddit/ twitter that ring can be bought down to TAM level should there be a need for new DP on their roster in the summer.

Dallas is in MLS, with no relegation. While it may be struggling, there's every opportunity for the club to rebuild and do better next season without losing all the money from being relegated. Dallas could turn things around in 2022 (unlikely but possible) and win MLS cup. Very different scenarios.
Note: the post I'm responding to was in the Bundesliga thread. I'm posting here because this is responsive but I'm veering far off into a completely MLS tangent:

I very much like that MLS clubs don't have to scramble mid-season to stay above a relegation zone.

In 2019, SKC, Vancouver and Orlando finished 21, 22, and 23 in a 24 team league (AVG 22).
In 2020, they finished 3, 5 and 17 (AVG 8.3).
In 2021, they were 4, 10 and 12 (AVG 9).

If they made desperate moves in summer 2019 they might have done better that year, but worse the next 2. Vermes is hard to like sometimes, but he's an SKC institution and mostly successful, and I appreciate that the club is not pressured to panic fire him in a year like 2019.

I also get that there are teams like Cincinnati, but I'm not sure their existence is worse for the league or the game than the teams who are promoted then relegate back down 1-3 years later, then pop back up, and down again, or just stay down after a brief time in the top level.

Yea. I think that proves my point. It's a different situation being bottom of the MLS table vs fighting for relegation in a top european league. I agree with you that I like no relegation in MLS. I think it fits for what american soccer is right now. Maybe it could change in the future, but for now and at least the near future, it's best to leave it as is. Especially with the league continuing to expand the number of teams.

Also Cincinnati is a strange fish, in the sense that it is a team with a great fan base, its own stadium, and a willingness to spend a lot to right the boat. They have been incredibly inept managing those assets, but they are not a team with no fans and an indifferent owner, that survives in a kind of half-life that brings nothing to the league.

LionNYC LionNYC Do you think we should create a special "MLS 2022 Season" thread, or just keep all general mls discussion including season but unrelated to nycfc in this thread? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyway, to my actual post, I forgot how much I missed these until today

I haven't even gotten to the power ranking and I'm already dying of laughter, I love this guy

Keep it all here. We used to do a weekly match thread, but it got unused after a while. So we just breakout the larger events (playoffs, CCL, All Star Game)

The Athletic has a substantial MLS 2022 preview.

There is more that didn’t even fit on the screen.

In other news, the hypothetical Eastern conference champions only tied Minnesota at home.

You know when we play them on 3/15 at home, those salty philly fans are gonna be coming out full force. We'll be playing after travelling nearly 4k miles round trip and hopefully knowing we are advancing in CCL. If we lose, they'll use it as evidence that they would have won with a full squad. If we win, they'll blame it on YS being too small in a baseball stadium.

Cincinnati still can't play any defense.

It's crazy, isn't it? Watching their defense just makes me appreciate our back line that much more. It's difficult to even figure out why their back line is so bad.

Thing is, it’s hard to have a great defense but it should be pretty easy to improve a defense from shambolic to just moderately bad. Effort and concentration payoff more on defense than offense, even if the skill isn't there. And they just cannot make that step.

For sure. They brought Cameron in hoping he could whip the back line into shape and organize them. But seems like he came back to MLS to get a paycheck and retire. Mata looks like he has regressed or cinci is just so bad at utilizing his strengths going forward.

Also - is it just me or is the Portland v NE game being broadcast from a potato?

Revs continuing off 2022 the way the played in 2021. Very, very close games. And you can see without Turner it ends 2-2 today.
I have a feeling we see a lot more ties by the Revs this season.
