Leagues Cup - August 5 - Cincinnati (Away)

FC Cincinnati is home to Queretaro today (8/1). If Cincinnati win outright or win in penalties, NYCFC will advance to the Knockout Round. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head, thus even if Queretaro lose their penalty shootout and end with 2 points. NYCFC already have 2 points and won the head-to-head against them.

Any other result, Queretaro win or win in penalties and our match has meaning for advancing and not just group placement.

If we top the group, we're either playing home (RBA) vs. Atlanta United or Santos Laguna who will finish 2nd in East 7. If we finish 2nd in the group, we're likely playing at New England, unless Nashville win outright at New England in the group stage in which case I'd have to look at the tiebreakers because each time would have 1 win and all have beaten each out in some pathway and then comes down to goals scored.

so do we want a rest or do we want to see if we can win leagues cup? that is the question...

If we've already advanced before our 2nd match, I think we rest players for this match because home vs. RBA or away at New England doesn't make a huge difference for a team/FO perspective. That match you take seriously and just go forward. Hey, it's a real competition with CCC spots (played at RBA unfortunately still for us).

yea i understand that. i think if we can rest players and sub them in 2nd half to keep them sharp or something, would be fine. it'd be silly to voluntarily rest everyone and lose that match sharpness. i think it's best if we can go as far as we can go. we can't do anything about the scheduling and break in the league season, so might as well navigate it however we can and benefit where we can. if we somehow make it to the finals and a chance at a CCC spot then all the better.

Are we definitely not playing at Citi Field on 8/9? (2 nights after Def Leppard and 4 nights before the Mets)

We know RBA is available for the knockout rounds of Leagues Cup ....

I've looked at the scenarios now that we are assured of advancing. This is actually quite difficult. No single website gives you the tools to figure this out.

To win the group, we need to beat Cincinnati, either outright or on penalties. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head outcome, so if we win on penalties, each team ends with 4 points, and NYC advances through that tiebreaker.

The winner of our group plays the 2nd place in East 7. That will either be Atlanta or Santos Laguna. Similar to our match, the winner of that game will be in 2nd. DC United has already wrapped up first place.

Second place in our group plays at the 1st place in East 5. That will likely be New England, who is hosting Nashville and needs only one point to take the group. If Nashville win, then it comes down to goal differential, which will favor Mazatlan, unless Nashville win by 3 goals or more. If the opponent is Mazatlan, I believe we will be the host team.

Per an email I got from the club this afternoon all home matches we may have will be at RBA. Alas.

Today, the club can announce that all 2024 Leagues Cup Knockout Round matches will be played at Red Bull Arena, when New York City FC is the designated home team. Furthermore, if the club should host a Round of 32 match, we can confirm that this match will be played on Friday, August 9th, at Red Bull Arena. The time of the match is currently TBD. Further information regarding opponent, venue and time will be released after our match against FC Cincinnati on Monday, August 5th.

They are offering a second window to opt out of automatic tickets. As much as I love going to the games with my son, trying to get to RBA on a Friday evening in the summer sounds like a nightmare.

I drove from Westchester to the PNC Arts Center yesterday -- took me 2 hours, 35 minutes to get there. No way in hell am I making that drive on a weekday.

Is it correct that if we win tonight we are hosting at RBA? Or are we waiting for more results?
That's correct. Win or shootout win and we top the group and will host on Friday, August 9th at RBA.

But it's not just group winners vs. 2nd in group as determinate of hosts. For example, LA Galaxy topped their group and Seattle came in 2nd in their group. But Seattle is hosting the R32 leg vs. LA Galaxy.

There are also rules in place for how the host will be determined for any given matchup in the knockout rounds:
  • The Columbus Crew (MLS champion) will automatically host in every round, including the final; Club America (Liga MX champion) will automatically host matches (in their designated U.S. hub) in every round up to the semifinals only;
  • MLS vs. Liga MX: The MLS club will automatically host against a Liga MX club except if the opponents are Club America (through semifinals only), Monterrey (through Round of 16 only) or Chivas (Round of 32 only), who would each host in their designated U.S. hub;
  • MLS vs. MLS: The MLS club with the best 2023 Supporters' Shield ranking would host an MLS vs. MLS matchup (except in the case of Columbus, which automatically hosts in all rounds);
  • Liga MX vs. Liga MX: Tournament organizers decide the host for Liga MX vs. Liga MX matchups.

As someone who forgot to opt out this morning, and with the potential remnants of Tropical Stomr Debby hitting the North East on on Friday. I wouldn't be completely opposed to a draw and loss in PK tonight.

Barraza doesn’t need to represent this club again. Not sure he’d stick in the USL
