MLS is Back Tournament - 2020

So LAG just got thumped

not surprising. they are not a good team. no dos santos and no zlatan makes them an even worse team. chicaritto doesn't add anything to the team other than a finishing touch maybe 80% of the time. i feel bad for Pavon. he'd be much more useful on a better squad.

2 quick clarifications on this.

For Group B, Vancouver would need to win by a score of 1-0. From there it would go to disciplinary points for the tiebreaker with Chicago, which seems likely if my calculations there are correct. I have us with 63 disciplinary points so far and Chicago with 51 points through 2 games. Fouls are 1 point, yellow cards 3, 2nd yellows/reds 7, coach dismissal is 7. It also lists "any supplemental discipline" as 8 points. I'm not completely sure if that applies to the fine Taty received for his dive earlier. My calculation is not including those 8 points at the moment.

I think I was wrong on the DC/Montreal possibility. The standings tiebreakers within groups are different from those for the 3rd place wildcards and I mixed those up. Within groups, it goes 1. Points 2. Wins 3. Goal Differential. For the wildcards, Wins is removed. Thus, if the Group C possibility doesn't really exist because a DC win puts, them at 5 points, a draw puts them at 3 with a GD of 0, and a Montreal win gives them a GD of -1.

What? Different tiebreakers for groups for 3rd place wildcards? That's so MLS.

Yeah, we're going home.

So pretty much unless VAN wins 1-0 with Chicago fouling the crap out of them, that's not happening. No way RSL beats SKC by 3 goals. Those are the extremely low probability results.

CLB beating ATL, that's very possible. NJ beating CIN, that's very possible. That's 1 result.

LAG with a win/draw vs HOU, that's very possible too. That's 2 results.

So thanks for giving me other stuff to look for, but I think those 3 matches are the key to us advancing.

I wouldn't say Chicago has to "foul the crap out of them". Based on looking at the 3 NYCFC matches and the 2 Chicago matches, an "average" amount of fouling should be fine. I would imagine it's more likely that Chicago racks up 13 or more points than not.

But I do want to clarify, this is based off a small sample size of matches (5) as well as an assumption that my calculations are correct. Both of which could be wrong or misleading perhaps.

Who cares because we suck now, and we are not going anywhere in the knockout phase, but the Groups E and F scenarios happening are are not farfetched at all. Don't see Atlanta beating Columbus (although certainly possible), don't see NJRB failing to beat Cincy, and LAG could draw (or beat) Houston. Those results get us in I believe.

Cincy could also beat RB 1-0 or by 2 or more and that would be good for us (coupled with Atlanta not winning of course).

Assuming we have a regular season, I want to advance very badly! Getting an extra game or more will help us build towards putting this team together.
The optimists in our fan base think that, once we get clicking (players figure out Ronnie, Ronnie figures out this team and league) we're going to be back to our east leading, championship contending ways. If their right, a long break will be detrimental to that progress.

Then again, the chances of continuing the season seem murky, so it may not matter.

I think y'all are worrying way too much about something not in our hands. Just let it play out over the next three days and just don't think about the probability, odds, etc. It'll just hurt your brain.

Your telling fans, many of whom spend hours per week on fantasy sports, to not worry about complicated scenarios? C'mon man, this kind of stuff is like yoga for some of us!

You're*

And yeah! I am ;)
Though I guess if it gives the forumites something to discuss, then it's better than what was happening before! lol

things to watch tonight, clb win or draw, mtl vs dc draw. both of those would be huge to us advancing. And who knows, maybe a few more games and we start to click.

I think the reports about DC drawing are wrong in terms of helping us. First tiebreaker is goal difference, and DC would ahve 3 points and a 0 goal difference. We certainly need the Crew and Red Bulls to win, but I don't think the DC-MTL game does anything for us.

I could be wrong but I think the MTL-DC result is immaterial. We lose out to the 3rd place team no matter what.
