New York Cosmos surive & move to Coney Island

Here's an off-topic tangent for you: the NWSL. Reading this, I had the thought that the NWSL and the MLS should essentially "merge", and MLS teams should also be fielding women's teams, much like the Premier League teams do. More revenue for the MLS stadiums, and hopefully a better deal and better exposure in better markets for female professional soccer players.
The women's leagues in the US is a hard question.

There are groups interested in setting up women's teams here, CFG and Barcelona for example, because it could be a large market.

But at the same time the attendance and tv ratings aren't there to justify a large scale investment.

Any league like that will have to be built like MLS. It's going to take committed owners with deep pockets who aren't afraid of taking a loss for the first few years.

Exactly. Which is why it could be great for MLS to do it. The brand awareness is there, the stadiums are there, the fanbase is essentially there... I mean, I'd go see the NYCFC Women! Sure, they'd take a loss for a while, probably, but it seems like a "WMLS" or whatever would be potentially a lot more stable than a wholly independent league like the NWSL.

...I'll stop here because obviously this is getting into "start a new thread" territory.

Unfortunately, their have been hostilities between MLS and the various women's pro leagues over the years, mainly due to investors who launched clubs in MLS markets who don't want to remain independent from the MLS clubs. This was especially so during the launch and operation of the WUSA back in the early days. From what I understand, MLS had offered sort of an olive branch to a partnership, but the WUSA owners thought for sure, after the US won the Women's World Cup in '99 to so much fanfare, and with it being the premier women's league in the world, that they would blow away MLS in terms of popularity. The WUSA ended up crashing and burning of course, but successive leagues have only had moderate ties to MLS.

I couldn't access the full article what's the reason for not going with any of the bids? Were they all garbage?

Unfortunately I can't either, but that would be my guess. (Maybe the Islanders are also serious about that site too?)

EDIT: Huh, it let me read the full article by accessing it through Google news. Relevant bit:

A source familiar with the project said the state was not enthusiastic about any the bids and wants to consider alternative plans for the site that would generate more economic development. Conwall declined to comment on the next steps for the property.

Cancellation of the RFP could open the door for the New York Islanders to return to Nassau. Sources told Newsday in July that the team’s new owners had met several times with officials of the New York Racing Association, which runs Belmont, to discuss a possible new arena.

so this week we find out whats up.....i read in SB soccer article they had til the 16th to agree on terms with USL.

i latest rumor is jacksonville is next to go to USL

Now I can comment on this topic seeing how I have FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE with this train wreck......

The cosmos are in the situation they find themselves because they picked NASL of mls..... at the end of the day the cosmos ownership did not have the money to go to MLS... MLS owners are people with almos UNLIMITED FUNDS at their disposal.....

Obrians failure begins with that NASL announcement i was at that press conference and you could feel the energy from the press go out the door when obrian said nasl and gave his reasons for it......

I always knew that NASL was going to be a hard sell for NYC fans..NYC is not a minor league town never has never been.....but i gave them a chance and supported them.... that first year was pretty magical but it was a mask to the uglyness that was really happeneing from day 1..... and the other championships that followed were all band aids to deflect the mess of a train wreck that was going on in reality.....

year 2 was the welfare year marketing was non existant there was no money for any thing.... i cornered stover and asked him questions and gave ideas he rebuttled every thing and finally admitted that there was no budget for any kind of marketing..so the best they could do was market via internet and call it grass roots.. sadly all they could do is market pele and the old cosmos who retired eons ago... they could not even market their current players in any way.. i began looking at the cosmos like a wall street trader looking at stocks and not as a blind fan.... the first thing I found was their Nike deal where THE COSMOS PAID NIKE TO MAKE THEIR KITS.... NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND... Clearly many in cosmos FO are UNQUALIFIED to manage a team or finances or any thing else... WHAT A STUPID DEAL but it was only the beginning of many.....

their stadium pipe dreams was what they were pimping out the fools ate it up but i kept saying if they cant draw 2k why would any government agency green light a stadium project for 20 k for a team drawing horrific numbers no where near 3 k on a good night... now looking back i think it was a tool to stay relevant in the news papers at best...

my patience began to break... one day their supporters had a Q and A with NASL Commisoner shit for brains doug petterson... who talked about his idiotic dreams to be a D1 League as if his teams playing in unpresetable HS bleecher stadiums could ever be any thing close to D1... his anti trust law suit vs MLS his presentation was a rant that a lunatic would make... i knew that day that NASL would fold under the leadership of a clearly DERANGED individual.... the Cosmos would fold for no other reason but choosing NASL over mls... I was all but done..... Incidents that got me ban from hofstra gave me time to check out NYCFC.. I have friends that were season ticket holders who invited me so i went with an open mind... I was plesently surprised the idea i had that it was a farm club or a promotional tool to promote man city was proven to be untrue.. in all this time CFG has let NYCFC stand on its own brand as they have let their team in australia also stand on its own 2 feet... While yankee stadium is not perfect NYCFC admits to that fault but they do all they could and can to make the fans feel welcomed... I have no doubts NYCFC will find a spot and build their stadium...over all the experience was really positive and compared to rinky dink cosmos operation it was night and day NYCFC was 900 time first class and professional... NYCFC made a stone cold business deal with modells that was very succesful... where as the cosmos could not get any thing done with any retail store because of lack of funds.... Stores make money on floor space they rent to products or the best wall space... NYCFC did what they had to to put their brand front and center.... Cosmos when they finally got to modelles with the help of UA it was much much to late.... while I was getting more sucked in to NYCFC thru good a source I had found out that obrian had stood up Don Garber twice b4 finally meeting him and came across as an arrogant unlikeable person..His current care free attitude that employees have hone unpaid since Oct only cements what an ass hole he is.... Obrian along with that idiot petterson and his insane scheme to war with MLS and US Soccer and USL burning their bridges with every one and making ENEMIES with The federation and MLS it is no surpirse to me that all that has transpired has lead to the cosmos along with the nasl into a massive train wreck.......there is a reason USL has accepted and will accept most NASL teams EXCEPT the cosmos... those bad feelings became PERSONAL and USL will do its part to try and put obrian and petterson respectfully out of business...

You come to find out things like that NASL COULD NOT AFFORD to make a new championship trophy they used the same one.. no team could keep it... One come to find out that the NY NASL office was a room in some shitty building on 34th street that was quickly gone cause NASL could not pay the rent.. You find out that NASL HQ was a office out of pettersons home in Florida and the its only a matter of time b4 the house of cards comes crashing down....

NYCFC is the present and the Future in NYC only a stadium with in city limits is needed to cement the final piece...

the cosmos are almost dead these next coming days are huge for them... obrian looking to sell to any idiot willing to buy that brand their idiotic fans who were all about FUCK MLS are now hoping that who ever buys cosmos name also buys red bull... good luck with that..... in the end the truth is Cosmos embarked on a road to OBLIVION MLS nor NYCFC have any thing to do with that mess its all their undoing.... It started with seamus obrian and ends with him... He underestimated that the NYC masses only want MLS not its poor minor league version.. He thought the brand was enough to galvonize the masses.... But you have no juice when your team has not played in 30 years and that todays spending audience were spending their money on NYCFC MLS because thats what they want.....

NASL error was not to get inline with WHAT MLS WANTS to go to war to make enemies and try to rip apart SOME THING that people backed by almost unlimited funds help build was not going to go unanswered.....

the cosmos are on life support today its brain dead and in a coma and the final chapter will see what happens to the cosmos......what deal can be brokered between obrian and who ever remains to be seen...........

Two thoughts...

1) I would really like an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary about the death of the NASL and the second death of the Cosmos...

2) Why does someone have to buy the Cosmos to rebrand/rebuild them in USL or even MLS? Cosmos 2.0 have nothing to do with Cosmos 1.0, so why can't Cosmos 3.0 just do the same thing?

Cosmos 2.0 bought the rights to the name, logo, etc. It was a different entity but they didn't just misappropriate the intellectual property.

Oh, because I always just hear Cosmos 2.0 just stole the history of Cosmos 1.0 and the different logo. I can see someone buying the IP for around $40M. Pays off the debt the team has and a little bonus.

If I was at the table to buy the team, I would first have a guarantee from USL for a spot in 2018, work through 2017 to find a location to play, and buy the team for $10M and restructure the debt the team has. Then, probably sell the Cosmos to NYCFC, Red Bulls, or even MLS just for it to stash it incase they ever want it in MLS, turn a nice profit.

Sorry. Can't help it but this was the first thing that popped into my head courtesy of South Park

There are a few have holes in that plan. No idea if there are any holes in any underwear.

These clowns have screwed Seb Guenzatti and left him on his own. Just one more reason I hope they fold into oblivion.

Apparently the collapse of the NASL is being held off because the remaining teams are waiting to see which one of the others will pay a full exit fee and drive the exit fees for the rest of them way down, and because the USSF is balking at relegating NASL to D3 because they're afraid of lawsuits.

http://fiftyfive.one/2016/12/game-chicken-steep-price-exit-fees-dictating-nasls-future/

So where in NASL's plans to prevent teams from leaving does everyone playing chicken and holding the season to hostage as they wait for each other to take the dive for them stand? If the entire season collapses over it and the league falls apart as every team refuses to fulfil their fixture list, do they get to claim breach of contract or do they just become a laughing stock?
