NYCFC 2021 Season Discussion

Answering my own question

Seems like the Silver Lake investment was for the Manchester Arena
It's not a surprise that this money is being spent here, right?

This would be 485 GBP out of 650 raised. FT reported that this money was intended to use for infrastructure projects including NYCFC's stadium. Not that all of the money was going to be used for it.
"CFG intends to use the money to fund infrastructure projects such as a new stadium for its Major League Soccer franchise New York City FC "

There were then some other outlets that took FT's article and regurgitated their reporting but saying that the whole $650m was for NYCFC's stadium, which was completely inaccurate based on what FT wrote.

I've been told separately that part of the money of the debt offering was for the new stadium. I wasn't provided any actual numbers or percentages of it.

there isn’t enough money left over to build a NYC stadium from these funds is what I’m getting at.

There is a staggering amount of investment capital sitting idle right now -- a stadium in the Bronx will be very, very easy to finance.

I was speaking to the original reports matching up the $500 million Silver Lake investment with a Bronx Stadium. It was never intended to be used for a Bronx Stadium. It was for East Manchester.

The $650m wasn't enough either. Remember that we're talking about reported $1-2 Billion being spent in the South Bronx.

I don't think this debt issuing was ever meant to cover the project. Considering the timing, it was likely intended to immediately make the payment to the bondholders that was last set at $46.25m.

And FT never said that these funds were meant to cover the whole stadium financing, nor did they ever say that the whole amount of money, or majority of it was intended for the stadium.

The amount of absolute dogshit I see smart people lining up to throw money at every day at work is amazing. Not sure if you are following the SPAC story, but professionals are so desperate for returns that they'll finance almost anything at all.

I haven't been following that at all.

Is there a “we’re right up there” trophy?

this was my takeaway as well. it really sounded like he was saying as long as we are top 4 or 5 in the league, that's good enough. if we win the league, even better, but as long as we're top 4-5 consistently, there's no need to make changes to get that championship.

maybe that's not what he's saying, but how he spoke, that's what i took from it.

I felt that as well, but in a capped league with playoffs, being right up there consistently is about as much control as you can have.

playoffs are probably the biggest wildcard. it's definitely the hump we haven't been able to get over despite our consistent performances year after year

Agreed. The reason I mention the cap is that when, for example, you lose 2 of your top 3 scorers midseason to injury and a personal hardship transfer, with the MLS cap you have very little ability to replace them quickly.

I took it to mean he thinks they only need to spend and invest enough for us to get into the playoffs. Supporters Shield is meaningless. He’s not wrong. But it’s curious to see him admit that.
And are the playoffs that much of a crapshoot? I feel like someone did an analysis and usually a Top 2 seed from either conference typically wins the Cup

Top 2 from either conference. Doesn't that equate to top 4 in the league?

Regarding attendance, I always wonde how tthe long-term looks. We know that the team does a LOT of community outreach with children etc, and I wonder if things like that brandish new fans and instill the support which will lead to them and their families attending games now or in the future. Do we think things like this cause attendance increases over a longer period of time? I have no idea...

Yep, in a league of their own.
I like how Chicago is in a Chicago category.

LAFC is currently having the most unlucky season on this metric of any team in MLS since 2013, tied with 2018 San Jose, by earning 0.51 fewer real points than xPoints per game. Our number is -0.35, which ranks 13th worst all time. Odds are both teams will get closer to the mean, but there is no guarantee. Three of the other teams with a worse "bad luck factor" than 2021 NYCFC were from 2020. Add that to 2021 LAFC and NYC and 5 of the 13 worst seasons are those 2 years, because this one is only half done and 2020 was only 23 games. Extreme results are more likely with fewer games. But that still leaves another 8 teams who had full 34 game seasons with worse luck per game than we've had so far.

2021 New England is second best all time at +0.54. Basically, if you really believe this is luck, (personally I think it is a big but not the only factor), then by rights NYC should be in first place with 34 points, Nashville (33), DCU (31), and the Revs in 4th place with 30, and NYC still has 2 games in hand on them.

West would be LAFC (32), SKC (31), SEA (30), MIN (28).
