NYCFC Sign Maxime Chanot

Does Hernandez not give you a heart attack on the ball?

I'm not saying Mena has been great on the ball, but Hernandez is god awful on it.

I feel more comfortable with Hernandez out there. I don't think Hernandez is going to do anything great, but I also don't think he is going to give the ball away 3-5 times a game. He's average athletically, average in the air, average 1 v 1. But he rarely makes mistakes. He's solid. Mena shows flashes of being brilliant 1 v 1 as a defender. Then he passes the ball to the other team's striker 25 yards from goal or sticks a foot in with a lazy tackle just outside the box.

Hernadez can be counted on to be heated by pace 2-3x per game and he'll blatantly foul the guy in the box which should be a PK if more Refs understood the rules.

I cringe with White making mistakes, but his mistakes don't lend themselves to PKs or red cards.

Mena yesterday had his best game in a blue uni. If he builds on that, I am pro- Mena. But he needs to string together 6 or 7 games like this.

So, when is Chanot going to be available for selection? Any news on this?

I assume that could be as early as Sunday, but I don't think we want to throw him out there cold in the Hudson River Derby - especially on the wrong side of the Hudson. He needs a couple weeks to learn the system and his teammates. Maybe let him sub his first time or two and see how things are going.

How is his set piece defending? I've no idea but if it's strong and he's fit I'd be inclined to want him out there against RB.

We've won 4 of 5 games he's played in. You need more evidence than that? And the goals in that loss were either offsides or a Saunders special, and the game was played in a sauna.

By now I'd argue it's pretty obvious that Mena has surpassed Hernandez, who is not getting his spot back. And if not for Saunders being out of position last night, it would have been 4 shut outs in 5 games

His secondary position is right-back. That spot is currently open with Allen covering for Mata on the left. It'd be a low-risk way to start him. Can't be any worse than White was last night.

If RJ is being deputized for Mata again, and if Chanot practices this week and has the stamina to go, I'd play him at Right Back against RB instead of Hernandez or White. The role isn't rocket science and he will need to learn the breakout positions for passing lanes, but if he has the legs for a game then he cannot be any worse than what we've recently witnessed from the dynamic duo. Having him would give us one more large body on set pieces, we'd have a guy not made nervous by a ball being passed to him, and he's a legitimate outlet option. I'd also like to hope that he can finally be the guy that antagonizes Grella, with close marking, so that he can't get any free crosses in.

Anybody Chanot if he's stateside yet?

NYCFC haven't said a thing about the roster spot.

And to be fair RJ was thrown into the derby start against BWP in NJ after one game. Then again that was under Kreis and we didn't really have too many other good options out there. So it's anyone's guess. He hasn't spent anytime with the team yet, so it would be pretty rushed if that was the case, and would likely rely on his (limited) familiarity with Brillant.

I fail to see how that could possibly be worse than playing Hernandez or White at RB???

These guys are supposedly pros (they cash a paycheck) and yet they're still haunted by routine balls bouncing over their feet while having time and watching it the entire way.

I feel like Mix or Ballouchy could deputize 300x better in the Right Back spot than either Hernandez and White, even if they have no previous history at RB. Seeing White simply miss the ball entirely on multiple occasions against Montreal showed just how poor we are at that spot with injuries. Chanot should help, but as mentioned before we don't know if he's physically able to play right now.

If Chanot is viable by gameday, I think we'll see him in some form. If he doesn't start at CB or RB, maybe he will be on the bench and come in once White makes a colossal mistake. I remember PV making a 30th minute sub at leftback at the beginning of the season. I can't remember who was involved, but it surprised the commentators and shows that while he is stubborn in the sense that he'll play the same lineup when we're winning, he won't hesitate to make a switch when it's needed if someone isn't cutting it.

It was Mena that was subbed out. First game back from injury.

That sub was for Mena at CB. Can't remember the game, but it was a brutal lesson from the coach - seems Mena took it to heart and he's playing lights-out 1-v-1 defending since.

Wasn't it Martinez that came in for him? I think it was one of the games we were playing 3 at the back, and he brought on someone who could cover the left side. Anyways, this Shannon Gomez injury came at a horrible time :(

Mena was playing LB that game.

I'm not sure why PV thinks anyone can play the full back positions.

And what is up with Martinez. I thought he has been above average every time I've seen him, seems like they are going out of their way not to play him,.

We played 3 in the back that game (Iraola, Hernandez, Mena) in our 3-4-3 alignment. He's technically a CB there. Martinez subbed on for him. There were no other defenders on the field.
