I think there's a decent chance that Etihad had at least as much input into the derivative jersey design as the team management did, and that Etihad might have been the deciding voice. Of course, that only happens if the team sold that right to Etihad. I think Etihad gets more out of there being identical kerseys than CFG gets. I think having near-identical jerseys will hurt crossover jersey sales. The team must know this, and must also have expected at least some amount of fan backlash at the sheer unimaginativeness of the whole thing. So Etihad must have paid so much more than any other bidding sponsor that it made up for that.
Orange and blue is hideous and it's obvious why we didn't use it. Just look at this atrocity. /sarcasm font
Yeah, it looks like a Mets jersey. That would be a terrible decision. Plus, orange and blue in NYC are cursed colors.

Etihad has no input on the jersey. People are really overstating how much influence Etihad has on the whole CFG thing. If anything, Etihad are beholden to the club for including them in CFG, it's not the other way around. The thing is that Etihad didn't even exist a decade ago - they are a booming company, but they are coming to the end of the phase where latent growth and an excess of investment can turn them into a world player, and they realised that their best way of getting in the heads of potential customers is by riding the coattails of an internationally-recognised entity.
For that matter, CFG only has limited input on the jerseys themselves. Sure, they were the ones who specified it to be the way it is, but the way it works is that the team will provide a product specification to the manufacturer (i.e. "we want it sky blue, we want red stripes, we want a pattern of a lion on the sleeve" etc). Then the manufacturer goes away and thinks about it for a while, makes some designs and maybe even a concept jersey or two, and brings back maybe 6-10 different possibilities to the club officials. The club officials then pick which one they like best. People who think that clubs have their own in-house designers coming up with the kits are sadly mistaken.
No, it's a government-owned company. As a member of the royal family he has links to the ownership, but he has no input on Etihad's board-level decision-making.
I wonder this too, There are so many boring kits in MLS, I wonder how much MLS or adidas puts pressure to make sure that the sponsor is the most visible part of the shirt.
Falastur you're completely right about the process. I realize Adidas makes the final design, but as you noted the client gives the instructions, and here the instructions were apparently to make it look as close to MCFC as possible without you (Adidas) getting sued by Nike. Those who pay call the shots. And no company is going to pay to put their name on anything without some input on how it looks. Or, well, they might but they'd be fools. And Etihad doesn't strike me as fools. I'm not claiming total control, but it seems near inevitable that they indicated a preference for total cohesion with their existing jerseys and that preference was followed. Which is not to say CFG had to be dragged kicking and screaming to that decision.
That's not only MLS, take a look at just about any clubs kit. That's a whole other discussion though.

I too am a New Yorker so I guess I can call out the constant stream of bullshit on these boards from people who claim to be real fans. You basically outlined in your rant why you shouldn't be a fan of this club. A club who wouldn't be here without foreign investment and that gave you world class players, want to build a facility in the five boroughs but dare to play in a sky blue shirt!!!!!!! Please. You wanting a club that is authentic is the exact argument that Cosmos and MetroStar supporters cry over. Go enjoy their teams because they're so authentic just like you.
Their output throughout social media has been incredibly responsive, there's no doubt that they have a couple of bozos on Twitter and Facebook that just do a search for NYCFC or certain hashtags and see what's going on and respond to people. Not on this particular subject mind you, but I wouldn't expect them to publicly defend themselves and nor should they. What they should do though is keep this in mind for the future and hopefully give the fans and the majority what they want for seasons to come. We'll see what happens, there's no use getting worked up over it anymore, what's done is done. Hopefully we get a nice away kit and then we can focus on the important stuff, what happens on the pitch. I was upset at first but I accept it now, it's not the end of the world and it was half expected to begin with.

I voted "love it" because the shirt turned out very classy imho. Like sky blue office shirts they will never go out of fashion. The party is about to start and we'll come with tuxedos in the MLS ballroom. 
And if anyone is wondering, I'm not a ManC fan at all by the way. But it also does not irk me that we go by their colors. Many teams adopted other teams colors. Barça got Basel's look, Juventus went with Notts County, why can't we adopt the City colors? At least in our case it makes perfect sense!

As has been said by others, the sky blue is fine. But just do something, anything, to give a nod to NYC. It's all been said, so no point rehashing.
Who made you the judge of who can be a fan? Per your posts, people that think like you should be fans of NYCFC. The rest of us should just find another team. Super suggestion.
I haven't posted a single thing about not supporting the club. I just want to make my opinion heard. When I disagree with something, I don't mind stating it. This kit and launch was a massive misstep IMO. I've said why I see it that way: it doesn't reflect any contextual awareness of the circumstances. It undermines supporters such as myself who firmly believe it's "not another Chivas". That was a position we could rightfully take, based on the quality approach the club has taken elsewhere. Then, by bungling the most public opportunity to demonstrate how right all of us early adopters were and their commitment to building a football club for NYC, they take us out at the knees.
More generally, the arguments about anything related to NYCFC being about money is misguided. It's not about that at all. All of CFG combined doesn't make or lose enough money to move Mansour's needle. All of the clubs are, in essence, PR efforts, a loss leader if you will, for UAE - an extremely well-conceived, dedicated effort to promote and affirm that nation's position and perception as distinct from the most of the rest of the Middle East and associated baggage. Whatever. Just as well that be the reason as a rich guy's hobby. We aren't the Bundesliga, where supporters actually own the clubs, so the ownership and their motivations shouldn't matter so much to us supporters so long as those motivations don't undermine the club. I say all that to say, once again, that I have no problem with our ownership. I have a problem with this decision. Being appreciative of owners willing to spend what is necessary to build a quality club and disagreeing with decisions aren't mutually exclusive. It happens all the time.

There is really no distinction between the government and the family. Mansour is the chairman of CFG, his brother Hamed is the chairman of Etihad. Their oldest brother, Khalifa is the head of the family and thus the head of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, thus technically in charge of both CFG and Etihad (two small pieces of the family's $600 billion fortune).

Stop saying that if someone disagrees with the kit it automatically means they can't stomach CFG. I have a problem with CFG if, and only if, they show that they are not taking NYCFC seriously as a team in its own right with its own identity, which, in my opinion, this kit release suggests. We can be part of CFG without being a cookie-cutter team. Fans can support NYCFC as part of CFG without supporting MCFC, Melbourne, or Yokohama.
Constantly bringing this issue up when people make unrelated complaints says a lot more about the Man City fans' insecurities than it does about the people criticizing the kit.

You guys are just complaining because you don't want sky blue and you hate CFG. Get rid of your season tickets, the merch you've bought, fuck the months you've spent on here discussing a team that hasn't kicked a ball yet and go support the cosmos. Otherwise shut up and agree with anything that happens.
I have a white card saying I am entitled to a free gift for attending but we asked 8 different representatives of the club including the front desk, and each one had no idea what I was talking about. Showed the cards, and each said to ask someone else. Classy!
I hate to admit this, but I came all the way from Suffern just to be a part of this. My son and I were stunned how unprofessional the entire 30 minute mess was. People diving for tshirts? Videos of Etihad sponsored cricket matches? Yes, the jerseys denote farm club status, and are incredibly boring for a brand new New York franchise, but my issue is less about the dull Etihad jersey and more about the crap way the season ticket holders were treated at this amateurish waste of time and money.

Honestly... I've tried my best to just stay out of the discussion. If you don't wish to partake in the circular argument just don't visit the threads regarding it. Plenty to talk about at the moment besides kits. Last time we closed threads all hell broke lose and we were 'censoring' and so on. If people want to piss and moan let them piss and moan. How anyone isn't tired of talking about this 3 days later I don't know.
Thats exactly what I'm doing, plenty of other things to focus on. There's the dispersal draft coming up, super draft, and our 3rd DP signing as well as other roster signings.
