As someone posted somewhere, it's like Ronny is a minivan driver in an F1 race car.
I think this analogy is pretty ridiculous. Ronny may not be Bela Guttman but thinking that he’s driving a F1 Race Car- that is a total fantasy.

Taty has been really good but even he, I think many would agree, could improve his finishing.
Santi looks like he’s got ability but still has much to prove.
Thiago is fast, Talles is tall…
Whose performance inspires you? Anton has not been as good this season. SJ has been better of late but was not special in many games that NYCFC needed above average Goal tending. Chanot, love him and yeah he’s mostly solid but he does seem to have a number of oopsies in him. Look, it’s not a terrible squad.
Props to Parks, Callens and Sands before he went on USMNT assignment. I actually think Cacha has played pretty well though not always. Do you really go down the roster and feel like your saying to yourself, “All star, headed to europe, total stud, All star, dynamo…” ?
As good as the defense has been and can be, it seems to possess blooper reel material in it’s forte. And the offense… can move the ball around, creates chances (what seems like many early and often) but doesn’t convert on many, not great 1v1 and haven’t been able to score more than their opponent in fifteen games this year and scored less in 9 of those.
No, the team is not a minivan, but an F1 race car?

I don't quite get this. In the thread below, the thoughts on where this team would end up in the East were 4th, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 4th.

Most other pundits that had less bias were picking NYCFC to be around 5-8th. But now all of a sudden this team has too much talent to only be sitting in 3rd.

The Red Bull game sucked. Ronny's gameplan sucked and it didn't work and we lost at home to our rival who also sucks. And all of that sucks. The recent form has not been great. But this team is clearly good enough via the eye test if we don't let recency bias get in the way too much (not saying we shouldn't discount the recent poor form, just we shouldn't also discount the previous incredible form).

For all of the analysis breaking down his wins/losses and PPG and our team's advanced metrics, I keep coming back to this. In the five seasons before Ronny, NYCFC's place in the Supporters' Shield was 17th, 4th, 2nd, 7th and 2nd. In Ronny's two seasons, we are 7th and 7th. And I don't think our talent is any lower than when we were placing in the top 4.

I think our Club is a nice test of the effectiveness of advanced metrics. We remain the darling Club of 538, and while some of that is the transfer fees we paid this summer, most of it are things like expected goals. Earlier in the season, the line was that we are playing better than our results, and that our results should catch up. We are still waiting.

I like the advanced metrics - I think they are innovative and very clever. They are also still in the embryonic stage. A lot more work has to be done to make them accurate and consistent. Just look at the considerable deviation among the various measures from different services, and you get some idea that it's still a work in progress.

Let's see how Ronny finishes the season. Let's see how the playoffs go. It's a tough decision to say finishing 7th is not good enough, but I do think this is a Club with higher ambitions. It's a roll of the dice - we could obviously do worse.

Part of the issue, in my eyes, is that the Eastern Conference is down this year. We aren't sitting 3 points from missing the playoffs because we've run into some teams playing really well. We are sitting where we are because we've had some uninspired performances in games we should have gotten better results. If you look at Toronto, Chicago, Red Bulls, and Dallas, those teams sit 21, 22, 24, and 27 in the supporter's shield standings. We have collected 5 out of a possible 18 points playing them.

The only 'bad' teams we have really handled our business with is Cincy.

I truly feel this is a fairly well put together roster, even with the likes of Chanot and Tinny having a dip in form. I just think we should be better than we currently are.

I just want the team not to suck. Ideally I'd like to be 2nd in the East and have two home playoff matches to makeup for the lost games at RBA this year.

this. Based on the underlying metrics, the performance of the team generally (before the last six games), and the investment in the team mid-season, expectations shifted upward.

It wasn’t crazy to think that the team would come together with the new additions/catch up to the underlying metrics/better luck/take advantage of an easier schedule to move up and finish a solid 2nd.

That is why their performance over the last few games has been so disappointing. Instead of a solid 2 seed and potential home field to MLS Cup, playing their playoff games AT YANKEE STADIUM - they are probably getting no more than one home game and if they don’t figure it out quick could miss the playoff entirely.

I also don’t get the “we’re a better team we’ll play better we’ll be fine” coming from Ronny and others. If you don’t win games you don’t get to call yourself a good team. It all won’t just magically come together.

Let's see how Ronny finishes the season. Let's see how the playoffs go.
The team will stumble into the playoffs. Maybe not 7th but lower than they should. Then they will win 2 playoff games. That’s more than they’ve ever managed, but still not winning the league or even the conference. Ronny supporters will point to having gone farther in the playoffs than any other NYCFC team or manager; detractors will point to 2 seasons of meh results and say the playoffs were just two games.
We will have the least amount of clarity possible. That’s my prediction.

I think Ronny's done a good job. I may not agree with how he does certain things, but he's the coach, and every coach has aspects of their coaching style I won't like. Overall, I thought we've been playing very well aside from the recent slump. And this team finds a slump every year, don't forget. Not saying that's not Ronny's fault, but I stil think that for the most part he knows what he's doing. He rolled the dice with RB and it went against him. It happens.

Caleb Porter won MLS Cup with Columbus last year and are below the playoff line this year. Philadelphia won the supporter shield last year and are doing worse last year. Heck, the Revs who are on pace for incredible numbers this year weren't on that pace last year.

I think we could do a LOT worse (see like ALL the teams below the playoff line right now...) and I'm just happy to have a team that consistently makes the playoffs.

One point in nine in the last 10 or so days against what the brits call 'relegation fodder'.

Sorry Ronny. Your roster may save you this season, but your coaching talent won't.

Can I eat my words?

When I read this, all I could think of was Sims saying how we are "consistently one of the best teams in the league"...

That's great and all, but I want to win a trophy.

I've posted "Ronny Out" a couple of times now. I wouldn't release him at this point - he should see out the season.

The issue is that I don't see how he turns things around enough to justify a third season at this point. The team muddled along and underachieved most of the season. Now, they are fully in the tank. Is it possible that we rally, pull some upsets and climb back up the table? Is it possible we follow that with a playoff run? Of course, and if those things happen he should stick around.

But, it just as likely that we continue to tank and thereby miss the playoffs.

Whether we tank or muddle, things are bad enough now that there isn't a reason for a third year absent an unexpected change for the good.

next three games: Nashville (H), RBNJ (A), Atlanta (A). If he loses all three of those then he’s probably sitting outside the playoffs. He’s done and he’s either canned early or is a lame duck until the season ends Nov 7th.

our best chance to get results will be against RBNJ. Nashville will be tough.. especially off short rest and in the slump we're in. winning at atlanta won't be easy on the turf field and against a resurging atlanta side.

Eh, we all know Ronny will either be fired or take a higher gig by then, just hopefully not mid-season.
