Stadium Discussion

So SFPhoto just explained the naivety that goes into playing armchair civil engineer, thinking one can just sit at home on Google Maps and plan an SSS locale. With that disclaimer in place, Imma do it anyway.

The location is just south of the Shore (Belt) Pkwy, across the pkwy from the Coney Island rail yards. It is far from my ideal location, b/c of distance from center city. It's towards the end of one spoke of the NYC transit system. That said, I'm getting a little nervous about the club looking outside the boroughs, so it's worth considering this location's redeeming factors:

1) 6-7 minute walk from subway station

2) Adjacent to a major parkway (alleviates the zoning requirement that it be near an arterial hwy; reduces the amount of traffic burden on neighborhood streets). Could have an entry/exit directly from the Pkwy as with CitiField.

3) Currently vacant space (though unclear on who owns the rights to it). Assuming it's not public land, it gets around the parks issue and the leasing/purchasing public land issue, which have been raised as objections in the past.

First off, here's a map with the dimensions of a current MLS SSS used as a proxy, but increased to account for the difference between their field size, and the maxium dimensions allowed by FIFA (100 yds W x 130 yds L).

The white line is the approximate stadium perimeter, the yellow box is the field:

Map showing walk from the subway. The D, F, N and Q all stop there. There would have to be a pedestrian walkway connecting W 12th st with the stadium across the creek. The connection would cover about a 300 ft distance.

yikes thats further than RBA, at that point you might as well just go watch soccer there....how long is that commute from manhattan by subway? 40 mins?

Issue is unless its directly next to the train people will not go to the games. Public transportation starts to thin out in the Bronx very quickly.
Oh right .in Manchester they built a new metrolink station to serve the stadium. So the Bronx is a non starter then ?

Speaking from what we have seen already I would say certainly. What will be very important to them will be the pretental to develop the area around the ground.in Manchester they are investing in schools colleges and now hundreds of houses.across the road from the ground they have built the finest training academy in world football that takes kids from all ages to the first team.whilst expanding the stadium from 47.000 to a projected 75,000 in time .over in Australia they have just built Melbourne training facilities up there with the best.
If I was to say where you ground would be it will be in a rundown area with. Plenty of land around with plenty of housing./ factories that would benefit everyone if they were cleared and the area regenerated.
Have you got anywhere that fits that bill ?
Spend the money? So far the largest expenditure so far outside of franchise fee is the training facility.

They spent zero on acquiring new designated players. And rent is free at Yankees. They should take a note from the Minnesotas potential franchise and just go buy the land you need without trying to find the best gov't deal with tax payer funds. Hope Beckham is reading this too. Maybe it's an English thing.

There are places in the Bronx with transit, just not a lot of them. Building new Subway lines/extensions is a non-starter.

Plus, if a location has convenient subway/rail service, it's a lot more likely to already be built up. The spots with vacant factories, etc., tend to be those that are more remote from mass transit.

I honestly think we end up near Yankee Stadium. I know that deal fell through thanks to the new Mayor, but it just makes too much sense.

This isn't Minnesota... even with unlimited funds its pretty damn hard to find a stadium worth of real estate in NYC.

If its occupied you will have hold outs, and then you will need the city to use eminent domain to evict them - ie Barclays Center. A very slow drawn out process with lots of protesting, legal proceedings, bad press.... etc.

If its not occupied, o wait every parcel of land in NYC large enough for a stadium is occupied or owned by the government.

Thanks for the link.
"We haven't put a date on it but within a 5-year window we would expect to be in and opening a brand new building."

No guarantee, by any means, but that's better than the original report of at least 5 years..

If he's not BS'ing, then this is great news if you think about it. They're probably closer than we think. Yankee Stadium took a little over 2.5 years to build. If you use that timeframe for the NYCFC stadium, then they either have a location locked in, or close to it. The other 2.5 years will be used for design and planning of the stadium. I think we're close if Pres of NYCFC is not talking out his ass.

I guess like anywhere else in the world money will talk and the mayor will suddenly change his stance if he's offered enough and he comes out of it looking like a man of the people

I would think he doesn't go on CNBC and give an actual estimate without something being in the works. Remember how many times in the past they would say "we are dedicated to finding a location in the 5 boroughs, and we are working to finding the right spot". Now there is a number, I consider that momentum.

ADUG worked to a five year plan when they took over city so I would say its pretty much certain they will know now where they expect to be at, on and off the pitch at 2019

This location would work for me. It's about 35 minutes from Bowling Green to Yankee Stadium on the 4. Trip Planner shows it about 45 minutes from Whitehall Street on the R with one transfer. The extra 10 minutes wouldn't be a deal breaker at all for me.

I thought I heard just the slightest hesitation in his voice when he answered those questions. That he went ahead and answered gives me some hope along the lines you noted. It seemed to me he paused - again just for a moment - to consider "can I say this?" and he decided he could. I also noticed he didn't hedge at all when he mentioned building in the 5 boroughs. "So we'll build a soccer specific stadium here in the 5 boroughs."
Not "we plan to" or "our goal is." Just a simple declaration of what they will do.
With the , sadly necessary disclaimer that they've shown a willingness to just lie I'm going to say I'm cautiously optimistic that they put that in the past and have therefore made progress on the SSS or he would not have spoken.

Great location for me. A quick, 38 minute ride on the N/D. About an hour from Grand Central. Not terrible, but those Northern counties are going to be pissed.

Who says either of us will own it.

Citifield is owned by Queens Ballpark Company, LLC, a subsidiary of the Mets
Barclays is owned by Brooklyn Events Center, LLC, also known as a joint venture half-owned by the Nets
MSG is owned by The Madison Square Garden Company, also know as the company that owns the Knicks.

Owning the stadium and using it for other events is pretty much the only way most MLS teams can make money.

I can see a lot of events going on at NYC FC's SSS stadium with capacity around 25-30+K.
- Definitely a lot of other sports including collegiate soccer and lacrosse
- Summer concerts
- Other live events...
