2018 Roster Discussion

We cut 7 non-internationals and only have 4 (maybe?) international spots available? Going to have to scrub up some Americans this offseason.

EDIT: We have 6 international players. We have two active trades where we receive an international spot and one where we sent out an international spot. Which would give us 8+2-1=9 spots, but only if none of those trades expire, which is unlikely. So we probably have 8-10 international spots as of now, but I don't think there's a way to know for sure.

The "could be re-signed at a lower rate" blurb is an interesting piece, wondering if any of these guys are in talks to just get a potential cut in salary, being why their options were declined.
Probably already said, but almost certainly that would be their ideal move with Brillant.

I hope they work something out with Struna. He strikes me as a potential top 5 RB and already a top 10 RB for MLS.

hate to be that guy but... reeks

Brutal indeed. I'm disappointed to see Struna go, though as others have said perhaps it's to renegotiate the salary. Brillant I'm not entirely surprised about honestly - just a gut feeling I had for some reason. The others I'm not distraught over - off-season is certainly going to be fun, I'll say that.

One thing I'll add is that this makes the protected list in the Expansion Draft almost academic, surely? Part of me is hoping we don't resign anyone before the said draft, simply because of how amusing it is on how few options we are offering up for selection.

Doing the cap math:

Allen - $101,667
Brillant - $319,667
Camargo - $108,250
Gomez - $54,075
Johansen - $65,625
Lopez - $75,000
Okoli - $53,000
Stertzer - $65,000
Struna - $75,600
White - $65,000
Pirlo - $457,500
Total: $810,809 of cap space made available
$457,500 Designated Player charge made available
4 International Spots Cleared

*I did not include Mena in my math as he didn't count against the Cap last year and his international spot didn't count

Updated above to reflect Pirlo's contract and the roster charges for the 3 players that did not count against the Salary Cap.

$811,000 is available for non specially designated players
$457,500 is available for a Designated Player slot
$2 Million (rumored) is available for TAM eligible players over the next two seasons. This figure could impact the $811,000 if a player isn't bought down to $0

No more RJ :weary:

I love me a Cinderella story and the flashes of Skill RJ showed for us after being picked up basically out of nowhere made him a legend in my eyes.

I freely admit we will likely pick up a better full back than the guy who was hanging around in our backyard, but I'll miss the big man
RJ was never good enough, but still holds the top assist in team history IMO.

For me there are two surprises: Struna and White. White was a low cap # and was serviceable at RB while Struna showed some flashes filling in at the end of the season, also low cap #. But Struna was essentially a guy signed off the street to come in and plug a hole, so not surprising that his option was not picked up.

Brilliant is also surprising, but that is a huge cap # for a backup CB. Maybe renegotiating is the way there.

On the other hand, I’m sure some of you will be happy to see the following go:

Mikey “nobody passes me the ball to build out of the back” Lopez
John “good enough to get subbed on and then off again” Stertzer
Sean “couldn’t hit broad side of the barn” Okoli

Struna was here for 7-8 weeks depending on how you break out the contract. His charge was about $76,000. Fair to assume his market value is somewhere in the $250k a year range based on that. Maybe it really was a short term deal to see if he was worth his market value or not

The through ball to Villa at Portland? Agreed entirely. I remember thinking he was porous that game and had committed an uncalled handball right before that, and then out of nowhere sends one of the most perfectly placed passes I have seen at any level of competition.
