2016 Mls College Superdraft

It makes no sense drafting a player based upon our needs for this season. With the rare exception, players are generally not MLS ready in year 1 and have a limited impact. There is no way a central defender can get up to speed quick enough to be solid starter going from NCAA to MLS. The gap is so.....

Huge.

Bingo. I do think there are players who can be MLS ready - Andrew Farrell was one. I think Vancouver and Chicago both had guys this year who were ready.

That being said, after this year, you probably have needs in the midfield as well. You could make the case that after 2016, 80% of the roster will be different than what it was on August 1st of 2015.

Please. late round picks are less than worthless. Honestly, Brovsky, Jacobson and KWS were worth more to us than the picks we gave up. Who were our 2,3 and 4 last year? Connor Brandt, hurt all year, converted from MF to LB, not very impressive in his time on the field, Andre Rawls, the GK we gave to Charleston, and Markus Nagelstad a forward we never even saw. I am sticking with my preference that we just trade our picks, including all future ones for intl spots or allocation dollars. NCAA is not a good developer of soccer talent

Normally yes, but I'd like to have a high 2nd round pick to use on this kid from Clemson. There are ALWAYS diamonds in the rough and not having a pick in your back pocket is idiotic on the off chance somebody is out there like this kid.

oops ... I screwed up

I'd swap a second rounder next season for one this season, if this kid is still on the board.

Read that last night. We definitely need to start retooling and rebuilding our back 4 for now and the futre....and he fits that bill.

Take the best player available. This team will look incredibly different in 10 months. A year from now, it's entirely realistic that the only guys still on the roster are Mix, Poku, Villa, Saunders and Mena.

The idea is to reload, not start from scratch again....

Well, who are the currently rostered players you definitely want on the 2017 team? I think the list is semi-short: Villa, Shelton, Poku, Mix, McNamara.

There's a handful of players that could prove next year invaluable to the 2017 squad, like Mena or Mullins, but as of right now I wouldn't ink any of them to the 2017 roster. In fact, you could make a case that Mix needs to prove himself next year too, in order to justify his salary.

I agree with the BPA notion, but the team does have needs and if a player of need does fall in their laps, I think they should jump on it.

I'm not sure what to say if you have McNamara rated higher than Mullins.... Mullins can consistently play an entire game whereas McNamara is at best a squad player for occasional starts and more likely a good last 15-20min offensive boost.

Let's average our two opinions and rate them about equal. McNamara won a POTM award this year, that indicates he can be more than just a part-time squad player.

I don't honestly think either player has the upside to be an MLS starter on a very good MLS team.

There are players on our team, that yes, are not starters. I do not think that McNamara and Mullins are mls starting quality, but we also have to realize that 1) we are a first year team that created a whole roster made up significantly of players that were on the back ends of their own rosters before the expansion draft. And 2) unfortunately most of the free agents that we picked up (besides Villa and Poku, amongst arguably others) did not preform to the standard that they were advertised to be (Mendoza, Nemec, Calle). And 3) they are young so we do need to address the potential for some of these lesser talented players to play vital roles coming off the bench. These young guys, while not our ideal starters, need to be siriously looked at as cheap option to fill out the roster. We have holes to fill, but dumping the cheap guys just to fill out starting 11 wouldn't be the smartest idea. They will be vital to fill the holes that we have until better options come along, and then they can come off the bench and still play a vital role with future injuries and substitutions.

P.s.- sorry for these long posts on the forum. They always seem to end up 10 sentences longer then I intend. Especially when I've been drinking.

You take the best player available because the MLS Draft is a crapshoot. If there is a close to sure thing, no matter the position (except GK), you take him. If Vincent and Harrison are both sure things, based on our roster, yes you take Vincent. But if you think you are signing a LB, then you take Harrison.

If Harrison is a better player than Vincent, you can find a LB. Go get the best player.

For no other reason than FYI, they did a mock draft over on mlssoccer.com.

"With the 4th pick in the 2016 MLS Super Draft, NYCFC is proud to select":
4) New York City FC: Jonathan Campbell, CB (North Carolina) -- Campbell checks a lot of boxes for NYCFC, a team that needs to get younger, bigger and more athletic on the backline. He may not be a Day 1 starter in 2016, but the hope will be that he can have a Tim Parker-esque track toward regular playing time by mid-season, and the opportunity to earn a starting job after that.

For the non-clickers Yaro, Harrison and Vincent went 1,2 and 3 respectively to Chicago, Colorado and Philadelphia.

Campbell wouldn't be a bad pick for us. He's physical, has good size, and is athletic. As stated in the analysis, if he can develop into a Tim Parker like player in his first year, we'll end up with a gem.
