While I don't know all the machinations of the Yangel Herrera deal, I assume it would be similar to that. City pays the transfer fee (in Yangel's case 2 mil) and then loans the player to us (which I guess bypasses some MLS mechanisms and plays out in our favor cap-wise?).
He's gotta be the front-runner for next DP at this point. Fits our modus operandi for DPs almost too well.
Iniesta would be amazing but not at the expense of a 19yo budding star. Herrera is a beast in the making and has single-handedly altered the execution of our tactics. Iniesta would be a ridiculous luxury to have, but he'd be more of the Maxi position and can he handle the rough/fast nature of MLS at this point in his career? Maybe he can, but I don't know if I want to bet on it with an either/or roster decision when we have a blooming talent like Herrera that's only just coming into his own. If he can't, then we'd have another albatross.
Ulrich ehich raises a good point. The key this summer is determining what happens to Herrera. Our next DP, whether Pirlo retires this summer or winter, needs to have a path to getting on the field. Where do you get on the field now? Not in midfield. Not at RW or CF. Maybe at LW, but what about Lewis?

Why Fuchs starts to really make sense.
That concerns me. Fuchs isn't a like for like with Mata, but we've also played a more traditional 4-3-3 formation with Herrera on the pitch.
Fuchs is a better defender.

Think it has to be somewhere on the flanks though? Chanot and Callens are easily the best central defensive pair we've ever had and the Ring, Maxi, Herrera triumvirate looks like a winning formula so far. I'm not unhappy with Sweat, White, Matta and Wallace but only Jack is untouchable from our wide players IMO.

You could go traditional 3-5-2 with our personnel in that scenario. Fuchs plays LCB like Azpilicueta does
I don't really know the nuances of what makes a 4back defender viable as a 3back, but in the scenario you're suggesting, that'd be problematic for either Callens or Chanot. Chanot needs to be in the middle as the leader of the back line and Callens is completely left footed (almost always avoiding making right footed passes)
But a 3-5-2 also suits Mata better.
Doesn't matter though, Vieira has never played less than three up front.
I'd sell Mata if he's worth max GAM, bring in Fuchs with TAM, and save the GAM for a rainy day. Selling Mata has intangible benefits of proving his theory that NYCFC is a step to Europe too, for other young Central Americans to see as a model.
Aside from that White at RB is also replaceable if a clear upgrade presents. And then maybe Wallace at LW? Though I like Wallace a lot. He could be bumped if we sign Iniesta and push Maxi out to LW too.
I wonder if Fuchs knows he's not coming here without a sizable paycut though. No DP room, so he's capped at $1 million. FWIW, this site says he's currently earning about $3 million per year: http://sillyseason.com/salary/leicester-city-players-salaries-69067/

I'd be surprised if money hasn't already been discussed. Whether a player/team are interested in each other from an employee/employer situation is known almost immediately. After that, the negotiations are all about the money/compensation side. If they're actively talking, then they've already been discussing it, and if either party isn't thrilled with where it's headed, they'd have broken off the negotiations (unless each thinks they can shift the other's position).
Does he? I think with Callens wheels and ability to close on the ball, he'd be great playing in the middle. Think of how David Luiz does it for Chelsea - basically, he plays as sweeper/destroyer in front of two guys playing a traditional style CB.
Just a thought.
Anyway, if the idea is to go to 3 ATB, then no reason to sign someone who makes it complicated.
David Luiz is a bit of a freak and can get away with more than the average player. Doesn't hurt that his hair confuses the opponent like a puffer fish.
Watch Callens with the ball on his right. He pretty much runs around it to get it on his left foot. That's contributed a few times to his lazy/late passes. I'd hate for him to be the one in the middle organizing when Chanot is clearly the vocal and organizational leader.
