I think that's fair but if we take that stance on Santi then Magno deserves the same pass. Magno has been productive in the past with better players around him, yet many in the fanbase have made Magno the scapegoat while completely giving Santi a pass. I have no problem with a wait-and-see approach for all of these guys if we are saying the roster is incomplete. My initial thought was that the incomplete roster "pass" is being unfairly applied only to some and not to others.
And I agree Magno should then also be given more of a pass. I will say might first reaction though is I feel Santi is trying a lot harder to make the offense function compared to Talles. You see the effort from Santi where I see a lot of failed take ons and complaining from Talles. And there may be numbers that refute my claim. But I have yet to see Santi flip off a teammate for attempting to try to make a play

Santi and Magno were both better when Taty was here. That also means they were both better when Deila was here. Very difficult to tell from outside how much of this is about the loss of Taty and how much about Deila. I do not like the Cushing Out signs. But I do think the coaching has to be examined as much as the personnel.

FWIW, Nick coached 8 games before Taty left when the team scored 2 goals per game average, and earned 1.875 points per game. Maybe it is Taty, or maybe the team was still on Ronny cruise control, or Nick hadn't changed things yet. Or 8 games just means very little. Or Nick might be a very good coach when things go well, but when results backslide and the players need help staying cohesive and focused he's not very good at that.
I don't know which of those (or something else) explains it.

Don’t forget option D in the multiple choice: a fun combination of “all of the above”

I think this is a team that lost a lot of talent after last year. They had a moderate level of success to start the season, but now has just lost all confidence.

This team desperately needs something good to happen to them. We were two minutes away on Wednesday. If they can just get a break, things might finally change.

Just curious, does anyone have a spreadsheet of current and former players separated out by shirt number? I’m just curious if every person to wear the 11 shirt has been a fan favorite or growing into a fan favorite. The three I can think of are Jack, Taty, and Gabbi. Was there anyone else?

Edit: did Jlew wear 11?

We don’t have a single player heading to the All-Star Game.

Please tell me again how Nick Cushing is the problem here

I’d actually say the whole conversation on other thread about how Magno doesn’t press hard when Santi and Gabby do is a pretty good example of coaching influence. I think Segal may be our top goals/90 player and continues to get very little time. Our false 9 experiments continue to fail to find offensive punch. We have no speedy counterattack despite having lots of quick feet on the team.

There are lots of reasons Cushing is hamstrung. But I also think there are plenty of areas where I’d expect to see coaching make a difference. We’d at least be trying new things, failing in new ways. But this team looks very similar week in, week out.

That’s the case. Don’t expect agreement. But that’s it.

What is Nick supposed to do about it though? When the press comes Magno sometimes does it well most times he slowly jogs in the direction of the press. He clearly knows the expectation and just chooses to put no consistent effort into it.

So what are we saying Cushing should do? Tell him to try harder? Bench him for not trying? I think we've occasionally seen this but the roster is so thin at some point he has to play him. Or are we saying Cushing should recognize it as a limitation and just design a press that doesn't involve Magno? Or just abandon the press together even though it is a clear strength of the rest of our roster?

You've actually just defined what is the difference between higher and lower quality coaches. If your only strategies for behavior change are "try harder" or "you're benched" then you are a very unskilled coach. Magno has shown he is capable but not consistent. Helping people learn to shift their behaviors, to improve focus, to align what they want with what they do is one of the primary roles of a coach.

I have strong opinions about this as I am an executive coach. Often a client will point out to me that their direct report just can't change. Obviously. Because they've told them to change repeatedly and the person hasn't done it yet. I call this the Nike approach to change - just do it. But Nike doesn't work. You need techniques and tools to manipulate and shape the behavior you want.

As a very simple example, I have had clients who are interrupters. They know they over talk. They know they interrupt. Often they've done so for years. They want to change but don't know how. I introduce the 3-star rule. Anytime someone else is talking they have to draw three stars during silence before they are allowed to speak. If the other person starts talking again while they are drawing they go back to zero. Wait for silence. Draw three stars. The technique provides a focus that alters the behavior in a completely different way from just telling them to try harder (or want it more).
