General MLS Discussion

Yep. Except not in the next 10 minutes, it was like 60 minutes later, but your point still stands.

I was going to reply a snarky comment to myself about Shwafta'ing it, but I left it
I don't thinks it's a Shwafta™ when the stakes are low. We don't really care much what either team does. I do root for mid-to-lower tier Eastern Conference teams in interconference play to keep the East-West comparisons competitive, but that's not such a big deal.

...So this literally came out of nowhere...!

I don't know what the underlying issues were, but it seems weird to me to let go of your head coach in your inaugural season when you're hugging the playoff line...

Wow that is crazy. Maybe he wanted more players and they didn't want to spend so he said f it? I liked him. He seemed to tell it like it is in interviews

former nycfc assistant coach, Lattanzio ( worked under Vieira) will be interim for the rest of the year.

he already basically said yes. he said its a "new challenge" etc. from what i read it wont be a DP spot, we will see.

LAFC has needed defensive help since they let Zimmerman go to Nashville.

He will be 38 in August. He has played fewer than 1,400 minutes each of the last 2 years, but his per minute activity (tackles, pressures and blocks) compares well to what he did a few years ago. He probably plays very sporadically during the season, then LAFC hopes he can have a great playoff run. But even all-time great CBs need familiarity and time playing together to be in sync with their teammates. I think he helps them for sure but I'm cautiously optimistic he does not turn their defense into a juggernaut.

I just think he's way past his prime and thought MLS was beyond this type of signing. I guess not.

I think MLS generally is past this type of signing.

But I look at it this way, LAFC are a contender this year and needs defensive help. If this signing gets them over the hump, then it's a great short term signing.

I have no issue with this from a league perspective and don't think it's reflective of MLS clubs' strategies in terms of building out this roster. I see this as a win-now type of signing.

I can see that side of it. If anything lafc center backs will be masters of the dark arts soon

this type of signing
Let's define.

Old MLS "this type of signing" - find a big name who can sell tix; sign to multi-year DP deal.

I think we have a knee jerk reaction to any signing over a certain age. But plenty of big 5 league teams sign players who are in their late 30s. Age alone doesn't make for a bad signing.

(Someone with more time on their hands could put together a list of recent 37+ year old signings in Europe.)

I think the salient point is that while Chiellini is old + past his prime, LAFC are really not paying much for him. No DP spot as reported, so wages won't be too high. It looks like an "old MLS" signing but without the money involved.

I for one would not complain if we got him somehow. Having a veteran for a season where you are frontrunning (like us or LA) is quite good. Just having him in the locker room and having him play 5-10 games is worth it.

I absolutely freakin' love Sam Jones.

is it me or has orlando city's attendance dropped a lot... 25K stadium and it's maybe.. 35-40% full? for some reason i always thought they had a pretty active fanbase...

I didn't see last night and don't know their attendance, but they didn't even make the playoffs until their sixth season in 2020. They won one round that year (the crazy PK sequence with us) and lost in the first round last year. They had to fire 3 coaches already for poor results (plus 2 interims).
I expect sustained poor results has led to a slow but steady drop in attendance and interest. They've done reasonably well since Pareja came on, and I think have new ownership as of 2021.But absent a Cup, things probably won't revive quickly.

It’s also documented that Florida sports fans are usually very fickle about Florida sports. If the are playing well, people show up, if they are playing poorly, most everyone leaves. I know this has been the case for other sports like baseball and football, but I’m not sure it also correlates with soccer. I think it has a lot to do with Florida’s population of people coming from other places, specifically retirees who continue to watch what used to be their local team and will tune in to the Florida teams when they are playing well because they are retired and have a lot of time on their hands.
