General MLS Discussion

Somehow, if we win our game in hand, we'll only be 5 points off of LAFC. Which is crazy to think about because you'd think we were farther back.
... Had we won yesterday, we would only be potentially 2 points off. Is what it is, though.
If we won last night we would have 2 more points not 3, so potentially 3 points off.

I always hate it when the red bulls win.... especially late in the game like they usually do.

i'm convinced MLS has told PRO to lay off red bulls otherwise they wont' be able to play at all cause all their players will be suspended.
That can't be it; however, I do think they get away with a lot more fouling than other teams simply because they come out from minute one pushing the envelope, and the ref, subconsciously if not consciously, lets it go. Their only other option is to blow a foul on nearly every damn play starting in minute one.

It's flat-out cheating, honestly, masquerading as "style" or "tactics."

your theory would be fine if the ref just wasn't calling fouls. but more often than not, the ref is calling fouls but just isn't carding the red bulls players but is carding the other team who is attempting to match the same intensity. As you can see in the tweet above, the problem isn't that fouls aren't called, it's that they are not being carded for persistent fouling.

It's both. One of the advantages of aggressive defensive teams is that officials tend not to call every foul. Doing so breaks up and slows down the game, and consciously or unconsciously, referees hate to call everything.

It's the same in basketball as in soccer. A lot of teams foul persistently, and the refs usually fail to call them on it.

In basketball, calling fouls threatens letting the players stay in the game. In soccer, that's giving yellow cards. In both sports, calling fouls stops the game and robs it of its flow. But, persistent fouling does the same thing, and refs need to call the fouls as they occur to restore some kind of balance.

American football too. The Patriots have gotten away with that shit throughout the Belichek era.

Philly just beat DC 7-0
Wild, wasn't it? I watched that one myself to warm up for El Trafico, and it's fair to say it wasn't that close.

DC United was just so bad right from kickoff, though. Tough to take too much from it. Unless you're the Union, of course -- three points, a solid pad on the GD and a nice little confidence booster.

So half way in the season, it really seems like its between nycfc , RB and Philly to take the east right?

damn portland showed up today.

This is why MLS is an interesting league. You really never know who is going to win. People say that about the EPL but really though, you know every year the same 4-6 teams are going to dominate the entire table. MLS really has some great parity while growing and developing talent, skill, and quality year after year.

LAFC really do seem like the team to beat this year. I hope we can find our form and find ourselves in MLS Cup final vs LAFC, most likely at the banc.

Some quotes from the Red Bull / Cincy match:

"I'm angry. I'm angry at the result. I'm angry at the way the game was officiated and it's the same stuff every time," Acosta said via the interpreter. "It feels like it's against us. I did not think Allan's was a red and, for (mine), it was chest-to-chest. I'm just not as big as Aaron Long, but it was a product of frustration, of being hit over and over again during the game and it boiling over in the moment. head coach Pat Noonan also addressed following his five-word opening statement: "Good point, terrible soccer game."

Asked if he had a problem with the performance of the game's officiating crew, Noonan smiled and asked rhetorically, "You setting me up? Does that answer it?"
"I feel bad for everybody who has to watch that. That's – it's so bad. And so, for the fans, people at home having to sit through that, it's unfortunate. That wasn't a soccer game."

I didn't see the game so maybe his frustration for what happened earlier was valid, but it was a head-butt. I'm sorry you're short Acosta, but your forehead banged into Long's lower lip.
