Sounders tie FCC in a make up game last night and now are 5 points back of the last playoff spot with 2 games to go. Barring 2 wins and a lot of help, they will miss the playoffs.

They need to jump over 2 teams, and have 4 options.
For themselves, they have to win both remaining games.
Then two of the following four must happen:
  • RSL drops 3-6 points
  • Minnesota drops 5-6
  • Portland drops 6
  • LAG drops 6
Those create ties but Seattle would have the first tiebreaker. RSL plays both the Galaxy and Timbers which complicates things a bit.
Also Seattle has a +2 Goal Differential despite 4 more losses than wins. Only 4 draws. They probably have a bunch of 1-goal losses and 3-4 added draws would have put them in a much better position. It's been a tough luck season for them.

There is one East/West interconference game remaining, and the season series is tied. Each conference has 40 wins and there have been 31 draws. The East has a +1 Goal Differential.
Last East-West game features Seattle hosting Cincinnati. Both teams need the points and Cincinnati has turned into a respectable road team.
I stealth edited the quoted post . It originally said the East had a +10 GD when it was +1.

Interconference play ended. It remains plus 1. The season series is a draw on results, with each conference at 40 Wins - 40 Losses and 32 Draws.
East edges out the West on Goal Differential at +1.

If RB beats Columbus tonight we clinch the playoffs. But if we want to catch RB, we root for the Crew and take care of business tomorrow.

ETA: Added bonus: with a win tomorrow NYCFC clinches a home playoff game.
For certain definitions of home.
Hello Connecticut?

Does anyone know who has the current second longest playoff streak in MLS? Seattle has made it every year in the league, and stands at 12 years. Assuming we make it this year, NYCFC will be at 8.
Has to be NJ, right? They've crashed out of the playoffs every year for a long time.

Last year’s SS winner misses the playoffs this year.
Seattle wins CCL and (probably) misses the playoffs this year.
Puts NYCFC’s performance in perspective.

Look at all the big clubs in this league missing the playoffs.

DC, Chicago, Atlanta, Toronto, Seattle, Sporting KC -- those are teams that have real aspirations of winning and have won in the past. To say nothing of last year's Supporters' Shield winners.

That NYCFC is about to clinch its 7th straight postseason appearance is a real accomplishment. Some of the most ambitious teams in MLS are adrift this season, and some of them have been adrift for a lot longer than that.

Chicago winning means an automatic entry into the playoffs, and Redbulls lose or draw means we can leap frog then tomorrow with a win. This would be the best case scenario for results tonight
