After the shit that went down in Vancouver, the only thing I am thinking about is if we win against both Toronto and Chicago. And Toronto loses at home vs. Colorado when we play Chicago...

We'd move to 1st place in the East but Chicago would have a game in hand and down just a single point.

We need Herrera healthy. 100% healthy.

The problem with the Vancouver game is that Chicago and Toronto would go in and beat them, while we floundered.
I don't know. I agree this loss was frustrating, but TFC has only the same number of road wins we do and Chicago has 2 fewer (Chicago has 1 road game in hand). I can't say it's clear they win this game. At home, we've dropped more points (7), than they have combined (6.) TFC also has 2 more road points than we do because it earned 2 additional draws, not wins. NYC's road problem is that when it doesn't win, it loses. NYC is tied for most Away wins in the East, but only 4 East teams have more road losses, and only 3 East teams have as many or fewer points from Away draws. Away draws aren't sexy, but they are the bread and butter of Away competence. Not getting road draws and the Home loss to Orlando is why we are 5 points back.

Nope, Toronto and Chicago would tie Vancouver and walk away with that point. A tie keeps the momentum rolling until you get home and bring in another 3.

So for the Toronto game we should have Maxi and Herrera back, but will still be missing Johnson, Wallace, Matarrita and most likely Camargo, right? Anybody else?

Also whatever happened to Shelton? I know he's a track star with feet of stone but would be nice to have as an option on the bench.

I am drooling at the prospect of Pirlo, Herrera and Ring in midfield with Maxi at left wing. If Maxi is effective at left wing, I wonder if we maybe see Wallace at LB after PV lays eyes on video of the last two Van goals.

You'd have to be drooling to consider moving one of the best cams in the league to left wing.

Ha. I see what you did there.

I figure with Wallace out and Pirlo fit, it's not insane. If I'm choosing 4 out of Pirlo, Tommy, Ring, Herrera and Maxi, Tommy is the odd one out. But that leaves a gap at left wing and Maxi is the best fit out of those 4. If Maxi can pick up the ball in those spaces more often than Tommy does, with his much better utilization of the ball, he could do a lot of damage.

And if it works out, with Mata out for the next few months, this shift opens up the possibility of having Wallace out there instead of Sweat.

I know that it's reductive to think of player ability in isolation of the positions that they favor and how they combine with one another, but this arrangement would give us more ballers on the pitch together than any other I can think of right now. If it works, that feels like a good thing. If we play White at RB, it gives us the ability to shift into the old 3-4-2-1 without making any subs, too.

And we have 2 weeks of practice to work on it.

Point of information: Wallace looked so bad in his outing at LB earlier this year that Sweat was anointed LB the next game and hasn't relinquished it yet.

Carry on....

If Maxi, Yangel and Ring are all healthy, I can't think of any legitimate reason to ever break up that midfield engine. There is no tactical arrangement where there would be any possibility of a net gain.

who's overreacting? you dont think Maxi is a top CAM?

I'm usually with you on this - play your best players at their best positions. But Maxi's game seems like a tremendous fit for the wing too. I would not call him "out of position" over there.

Our wingers cut underneath Villa a lot too. It's more like an advanced, fluid attacking midfielder. It might be an even better fit for Maxi, who does surprisingly well in the thick of things despite his size, but still does get pushed off the ball occasionally, and expends energy doing so rather than playing in space.

I've been on this forum for a short time and I have to say this might be the most over reactionary forum I've ever been on.
Is this your first footy forum? To hell with that, sports forum in general.

I think the whole purpose is to overreact and discuss crazy and occasionally not so crazy ideas.

I actually get what Christopher Jee Christopher Jee is saying. It probably only works with Wallace at lb, as he says. But I'm a bit concerned about how much room Maxi has to operate if Pirlo is just floating around. I worry he would drag more defenders into the space where Maxi likes to pick up the ball.

We are best when someone is driving at the opponents. I know Pirlo's involvement in the sustained buildup is pretty to everyone, but it so rarely results in a goal. To hell with patience. Keep going at the defense when they're on their heels.
