New Jersey - Postmatch

Speaking of jerseys- anyone know who the escorts were yesterday? The purple-white kits. My friend was wondering, and I told him I'd ask on the forum-- I figure someone would know lol

Oh I don’t know, it’s kinda like when you go visit the Vatican you don’t wear shorts and short sleeves. With a game, either wear the colors of the teams playing or go neutral if you aren’t aligned, but wearing another team’s jersey is kinda douche in that it says the person wants to be taken seriously as a soccer fan because they like a particular club/country enough to have the kit.

I can’t think of a single college or pro football game, or MLB game I’ve ever been to where fans are wearing third-party jerseys.
Completely disagree. Comparing it to the Vatican? Come on lol

You see this all the time at hockey games. I became an adopted Islanders fan, but didn’t have any Isles stuff. So I wore Sharks jerseys or my Italia jersey. I’d have someone come up pretty much every game to chat about Sharks or ask where I got the italia jersey.

You don’t see it admit much in other leagues because they don’t have much in the way of international teams/foreign teams.

So a few things. In a way that was a boring match but in another way we refused to play their usual high-press game and just held things still in a sense until we were able to put one in. I'll certainly take that over getting creamed by them again, that's for sure. So yeah, not the prettiest, but who cares?
We don't have an overall 2018 attendance thread
I have my spreadsheet all set up for this year but haven't really felt like making the charts so far, but I've been getting kind of curious since it's no longer the beginning of the season so if you give me a few days I'll get that together. Had some super cold days at the beginning of the year so it'll be interesting to see what the numbers look like. Felt like an "honest" 30,000 last night as compared to the usual "puffed up" 25,000 sold (but maybe not actually there) that we usually get. But in some ways turnout isn't so important as long as they are able to continue to sell tickets. I'd definitely want to have fans in seats though, of course.

I loved that Domè halftime spot interview. MLS always does that, grabs the coach for a one line question with a five second soundbite answer. Having seen him do the Rockefeller Center Q&A however, it now seems obvious that Domè is incapable of giving a short answer LOL. His answer was long (in a good way) and he was waiting for the followups to the point where they had to fade him out so they could get to the break. Was hilarious. I'm sure he had it explained to him though so we'll see what happens the next time. Looking forward to it!

Lastly, onto the shirt question, I've been thinking about this because I want to (finally) go see Man City play a real match in their own stadium this upcoming season. I have a pile of City jerseys (Thomas Cook) but was thinking of wearing our first year jersey as it's almost the same as theirs but with the different crest. I've really been unable to decide if that would be a conversation starter with piles of fans or if I'd end up regretting it and should just wear a Man City jersey. Been flip-flopping on this for a while. As to other team's shirts, I have no problem wearing my team's gear if I'm in a neutral stadium just to see a game, and I have no problem with people coming to ours wearing other teams' stuff. It's like that Miami Marlins guy who you always see in the seats behind home plate during the baseball playoffs regardless of what teams are playing. Got no problem with that at all.

A local affiliated soccer club. Why my daughter couldn't do it. Only reason I know.

I'm really impressed with Dome's tactical flexibility. This play shows how our approach of playing it long over the top of RBNJ's high press to speedy players was just as effective at tiring the RB players as PVs possession game with considerably less risk. Look how far Lawrence has to run at a full sprint to try to get back on D. It was a scrappy creative approach and a great change of pace from PVs stubborn I'm going to beat you my way regardless of how much it plays to your game plan approach. I'm excited to see what else Dome does to adjust to opponent's and exploit weaknesses. It will be massively beneficial come playoff time too.

I'd take a couple of NYCFC scarves and skip the shirt. I believe they see wearing the team jersey as a kid thing, i.e., we've aged out of that being okay public attire.

Plus, you can probably trade your scarf with someone and have a conversation starter and a memento.

ETA: Then again, do whatever the hell you want. Sounds like a reasonable plan. And I definitely don't think the NYC shirt will cause you any particular grief.

Hot takes:

first few mins - Jlew = Jonah.

8' - gets asked what went wrong in 4-0 losses. Basically how did PV fuck up? "don't lose the ball in the 18" And "SJ & CBs don't always have to pass out of the back."

12:30 - " I watched the last couple of games vs NJ and they won every single duel"

15' - "I needed to break the mentality of losing 4-0, 4-0 for 2 straight games"

16' - About playing strictly out of the back: "If you give me Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets, sure we can play that way. But with these players we have to make adjustments."

I think this guy gets it :)

ETA: forgot where but he said when he brought “Jonah” on he changed to a 442.

I think back to last year - when we had great success against the Red Bulls. Our approach was a mixture of playing out of the back and being more direct. We kicked it long against them more than we typically did that season. Kind of like we did against Dallas this season (for example).

For some reason we were more stubborn about building from the back in our two meetings this year, and the results speak for themselves. This game was really the opposite. Almost no attempt to build from the back. I will be honest that I'm not sure that's the best approach either - especially given the success we had mixing it up last year. However, with a new coach and no Villa, maybe the decision was to just play over them.

Between what I posted above and this, I just hate the Red Bulls. Everything about them. Every one of their players and fans. Before their 4-0 MLS win, the last time the Red Bulls beat NYCFC in MLS play was July 24, 2016. Hubris in New Jersey.

EDIT: Matt Doyle, retweeted the tweet below. Rag.

The bias in the media is getting so out of hand. Between MLS Digital saying RB has dominated us. (we're winning the series 4W 3L 1D since the start of 2016), now the NY Post have an pro-Red Bulls fan write the article of the game in their paper.

The guy who wrote the article. One of many tweets...
Mark Cannizaro wrote the article, as can be easily seen in the first tweet you posted. The guy you're going on about took the photo that accompanied the article.
This is the photo. It is incredibly biased:
