Colorado - Postmatch

I was trying to figure out where we catch up, so I made this chart. Seems we're still behind on matches till our 3 game homestead in the first half of September during the international break (9/3-9/11).

Thanks for the schedule chart. It is better than I feared.

Our first short rest is August 8 against Houston. Our previous game is 8/3. Houston also plays 8/3.
Then we play at Atlanta on 8/11 and Atlanta has a full week rest.
The next short rest is August 21 against Columbus. Our previous game is 8/17. Columbus also plays 8/17.
Next is RB on 8/24, who also plays 8/21.
Next is 9/11 against TFC. Our previous game is 9/7. TFC also plays 9/7.
Then 9/14 against San Jose. SJ also plays 9/11.
At this point we are caught up having played only 1 short rest game against a fully rested opponent.
But we still have another 3 game week.
Sept 25 we play Atlanta with our previous game on 9/22. Atlanta plays 9/21.
Then Sept 29 against New England. The Revs also play 9/25.

All in all I'd say that's a good job by the MLS schedule makers.

ATL has a USOC match 8/6 before our 8/11 match. Not the same short rest as us (why we playing on a Thursday night?) but they will be putting out their A-team to beat ORL and advance to the USOC Final on 3 days rest from their match on 8/3.

I’m struggling to see where Matarrita fits in. It’s obvious he can’t defend, so you can’t play him as a straight up left back. But then, if all of his “potential” is as an attacking player, he doesn’t seem that sharp in the attacking third either...like all flash and no end product all around.

It reminds me of the famous Darlington Nagbe heat map joke (best player in the world but a disaster in the final third) except Mata would be that heat map for both ends of the field.

Twitter’s amazing folks, I found the reference. Flip the light green and red both the offensive and the defensive end and that is Mata.

Callens / Rocha as inside LB in a 4-1-4-1 behind a traditional winger.

NYCFC : Man City as
Callens : Laporte as
Rocha : Delph or Zinchenko to
Gary Mackay Steven : Sane

Where does the glaring need for a LB rank in the history of complaints about players on this site?

McNamara
Grabavoy
Target Striker
RB

I’m missing a dozen more I bet.

LB is behind dumping Grabavoy, TMac, and Medina.

Considering how completely we seemed to control this game, both while we were 11 v 11 and later on, I think the only real downside to our performance is the way we let COL back into the game after Mitrita's goal. They could easily have tied it on Rosenberry's chance, and that would have been embarrassing and unnecessary. Kudos to them for showing heart and determination, but they are such a limited squad that, being 10 v 11, they needed a lot of help from us to even cross the midfield line in possession. And we gave it to them. The fact that we pretty much just stopped playing after the 2-1 is really bad.

The truth is COL bunkered very deep at home, and they had exactly 1 dangerous counter in 81 minutes. They scored, good for them, but that's not an erroneous game plan nor a bad look for our team. I think we imposed our will and obvious superiority for 81 minutes. It is impossible not to lose the ball at some point, and that gave them their one and only chance, and it happened to pit a very quick guy in Lewis against a sub in Ibeagha. No big deal. What should make us really mad and concerned were the last 10 minutes of the game.

I just think we were pushing so hard for the entire game that when we scored that goal, mentally the team started to check out a bit. Obviously that can't happen, but between the mentality of that game and the altitude, I don't think it's something to be angry about. It came close to being a complete disaster, but thankfully it wasn't.

Were were also missing a good portion of our spine and Isi, on the road in altitude. I expect us to look much sharper on Friday with a full roster to choose from.
