NYCFC 2021 Season Discussion

Another thing to factor into our performance this season. Apparently, home field advantage is stronger in MLS than in any other league. Against that backdrop, we have had half our home games in an empty stadium in another state. Now, we should still have gotten some of what assists a home team (e.g. travel), but this is worth a mention.

Fair, but also fair to note that if 2021 NYCFC earned H and A points at its historical average(x-2015), they would have 2 more Home Points and 6 more Away points. Home underperformance is not the primary problem this year.

We actually had a pretty decent record at RBA this season as the home team.

4-2-2 record, including 4-0-2 in our last six games there.

Thinking about this more:
  1. give us back the disallowed goal off Medina's noggin against Toronto at home
  2. don't call handball at 90+147 against RB away, and
  3. one of
    1. stop 2 bangers in DC
    2. stop Nani's banger in Orlando
    3. don't end a 25-game scoring streak against a high schooler in Chicago, or
    4. don't collapse in the second half against a terrible team in Toronto.
And NYCFC has a completely normal almost exactly average (for NYCFC) season with 7-8 more points and sits in second place to a team having an unnaturally blessed record setting season.

Any fan always does “could have, should have” about a few things that should have gone the other way during a season, but wow those are some really bad ones

For the RB game you could also have said:

-doesn’t call red card against Parks
-let’s the Taty second goal stand
-etc etc

wow just a cascade of brutal ref decisions (or even maybe have ONE just ONE bad call go in NYCFC’s favor) in that one.

And if all of those happen (+2, +2, +3, +2, +2, +2, +2), we're at 55 points (and a game in hand) compared to 65 point New England. I'm all about the what ifs. The first one really could decided whether we're in the playoffs, or host a playoff match...

I think this is why those of us who are banging the drum of "This team is playing well, the process is fine, etc" feel so secure in our thinking. This team has had an unnatural amount of weirdness happen to them this season. It's also why I think if they do get in the playoffs -- and I'd still be very surprised if they didn't -- they will be a tough out. Almost every team in the East won't want to face us, especially if we can get home games.

I limited #3 to Away games, because as previously noted, I only needed 2 home points to get to NYCFC average. But there's also
  1. don't give up 2 free kicks to Zelarayan in one game
  2. don't face possibly Turner's best game of an excellent season in June, and
  3. don't play the second leg of the derby after 2 reds in the first leg
I agree the team seems unusually snakebit this season. Both external stuff and self-generated problems seem to be maximally designed to effect results. Pragmatically I respect the Parcells "you are what your record says you are" mindset. But he also worked in probably the least random major team sport, in which random variance is mostly confined to fumble recoveries, place kicker yips, and the universal officiating effect. Soccer and baseball probably represent the other extreme end.

Right, I agree with that. It's also why I don't really think Ronny should get the axe unless they really do miss the playoffs. I think he's done a good job here -- the team has, at times this year, played some of its best stuff in a long time. I also think the weird season of playing two games a week every week for two months has impacted them, I just don't know why it's impacted them more than other teams.

and with tonight's results we are now below the playoff line. A loss tomorrow keeps us below the playoff line, tied with New Jersey for 8th place. A draw or win puts us in 6th/5th place, which is worth an away 1st round playoff game (i.e. a loss, IMO).

If we start playing well and string together a few wins, then we can get back into the conversation of a home playoff game.

That's where things stand. Put up or shut up. Unfortunately I think Ronny stays into next season regardless.

If we miss the playoffs, they can’t keep him, can they? They spent A TON of money

When I looked at the standings this morning… it feels kind of unreal. I swear that people were talking about them being one of if not the best team in MLS. Was that a dream? Today may very well be the defining match of the season.

Yeah, I think if they miss the playoffs there will have to be a scapegoat. This team is too good to miss the playoffs, and if they completely go belly-up, it will have been a 20-game season-ending swoon. That's just too much, and I think he'd be gone.
