NYCFC 2021 Season Discussion

Ronney has a lot of excuse quotes. Lineups are inconsistent, the goals will come we have just been unlucky, the calls didn't go our way etc. Personally, I'd like to hear more of the "we must do better" type quotes from him as opposed to always having some justification for a poor result.

And I keep hearing “we’re the deepest team in the league” so by that logic NYCFC should be still winning if they have to rotate their lineups.

You know who is the deepest team in the league? New England. Don’t hear them whining about schedule, players out, etc…a number of their players missed games and the lineup was shuffled…and yet they just keep winning.

We are now 25 points off the pace in MLS.

That’s unacceptable. Anyone defending the coach or sporting director is delusional.

we’re only going to make the playoffs because Montreal stinks and we now have 7 playoff spots.

Is the 2022 winter window the worst window NYCFC has had?

Ring, Matarrita, Mitrita, Scally, Stuver out.

Amundsen, Morales, Thiago, Talles, Santi, Gloster and Jasson in.

In and out were a wash.

Ring had one year left. Better to move a veteran a year early than a year late, especially at his salary. Also, there was a logjam with Ring/Sands/Acevedo. Preference may vary, but there is no doubt to me which of the two will be better in 2022.

Mataritta was full of effort when he played...but he was ALWAYS injured and had enough of a history of brain farts that it was becoming a feature and not an exception.

Mitrita can sulk elsewhere. I'll concede his skill with free kicks is missed, but his lack of defense is not.

Scally was a loss in 2019-2020 when he should have played more. The transfer this year was moot.

Stuver was never going to start.

As for in, Morales alone may make the net of the window negative, but Thiago, Talles, Jasson and Santi are all young attackers that have potential to grow (with Santi the best, in my opinion). Amundsen and Gloster are fine as backups.

Perhaps the net assessed over a single year was a loss, but it is close to neutral. For roster balance and long term, it is better.

At times I wish the team would sign a star veteran ala the Villa days, but the reality is that NYCFC is a second tier team in a second tier league and it is much more fun to follow the team when you realize they are a minor league team - which is 100 percent fine and can be fun with the right perspective.

their next game is away at RBNJ, who are now unbeaten in five games while NYCFC has won one in eight and hasn’t scored a goal in over 3.5 games. Then, they go down to Atlanta where you can pretty much chalk up a loss every time.

they will probably be below the line with the final four games to go.

If Montreal’s performance is the definition of stinking then NYCFC stinks too. They have the same number of points in the table.

In and out we’re NOT a wash. Ring was not replaced. We still don’t know who our best LB is. Stuver is having a better season than Johnson. Mitritas goals have not been replaced.
The young guys sitting on our bench may be good in the future. But they sure as shit aren’t any good right now.

6. For 70 minutes neither NYCFC nor Nashville could put a shot on frame in Harrison, then for the final 20 minutes the Cityzens turned it into a shooting gallery. Joe Willis came up huge, though, to preserve the scoreless draw for his side.
NYCFC haven’t scored in three games and have gotten themselves into a bit of worry having dropped down to sixth in the East, just a point ahead of Atlanta. The fanbase is not super happy right now.
I don’t know what to say other than “Keep playing like this and the goals will come.” Go back and watch how easily NYCFC -- finally back in the 4-2-3-1 -- gashed the usually excellent Nashville defense, and how quick and relentless the off-ball movement was. It required an absolute blinder from Willis to keep them off the board.
Willis has had something of a down year compared to his last couple. If this performance signals a return to last year’s form, Nashville are going to keep their lofty perch near the top of the table and are going to be tough as hell in the playoffs.
Two more notes: I wouldn’t be shocked if Taty Castellanos hears from the Disciplinary Committee again. This was real bad.
And second is that Anton Tinnerholm had to be helped off the field midway through the first half with what looked like a very bad Achilles' injury.

Hmmmmm

This off-season will be make or break with 2 DP spots to fill. There will be a lot of turnover and we’ll see how committed CFG is to this team by how they fill them. I’m not looking for a name — but I don’t want any more U23 players that will take six months or more to be ready to play. Get me a Maxi replacement who will be here for 4+ years and have 20 goal involvements. Please!

“Keep playing like this and the goals will come.” Not sure I believe that any more.

So is Heber not healthy? He’s been back for three weeks and can’t really get on the field. What the hell.

Excited to see Grey hopefully get a run of games. But we’ll probably get Gloster or Callens out there

I don't think you'd expect anyone coming back from an ACL tear to be playing more minutes than Heber has at the moment.

He's definitely not completely healthy and completely fit and that was expected.

gloster is a leftback. if gray is healthy, i think we see him at rb over gloster or anybody else. unless we are going to a 3atb and are looking for fouls, then jasson might go there.

Martinez had 14 months off between his ACL injury and first game back, though some of that was based on when he was hurt and when the 2021 season started. He might have come back after a shorter layoff if the 2021 season started normally, or if he were hurt late in 2020 like Blanco and Heber were, but that's speculation. Once back after those 14 months, he played significant minutes almost immediately: 66 in his second game, and a full 90 in his fifth.

Blanco came back in June from his ACL injury after only 9 months and change. He then took longer than Martinez to play major minutes. He waited almost 2 months to play a full half, and has yet to play a full 90, though he has gone over 80 a few times.

Heber was out almost a full year, roughly 2.5 months more than Blanco. Assuming Blanco was not rushed, and Heber was not held back without reason, then either his injury was worse or his recovery simply took longer for whatever reason. So far he's also playing less than Blanco did at first, and I don't think anyone should be surprised at that.

Goes to my point this was A piss poor transfer year. We’re getting nothing from Heber and have no cover for Taty

That’s actually the definition of practice.

Jokes aside, wasn't Ian Joy saying that this team doesn't get a chance to practice? That makes no sense, as I've seen videos of a much busier Manchester City squad practicing on the regular.

they have time now ( minus callens/ johnson). so if that's the "issue" with this team, then they better come out swinging and scoring vs Red Bull.

The excuses to which the FO (through their mouthpiece, Ian) will go to know now bounds. Oh now they are not good because they don’t practice? They have the same damn schedule as every other MLS team!
