NYCFC Confirm Departure of PV. Nice Confirm Arrival of PV as Manager.

I'm on board with this hire.

We all need to set our sights lower moving forward on coaches and DPs. Let's be the best MLS version of City we can be.

That article helps, yes. Thanks. I'm still not on board. Definitely not excited. I want a guy who has experience being in charge at game time. I will just have to wait and see.

So you'd be happy with Porter or Arena?

The other issue that makes this hire reek are the rumors PV stuck around longer so that CFG would have time to find his replacement. Borrell was available the moment the premiere league ended, so PV wouldn’t have offered a longer stay through yesterday if CFG had immediately tapped Borrell to take over, which means Borrell wasn’t the first choice. Whether the first choice was Arteta or somebody else, we may never know, but if Borrell is anything other than an interim manager, with somebody else being tapped after the WC/pre-European season musical chairs shuffle completes, then I’m not impressed.

It goes back to an earlier post of mine that listed theee items CFG would need to hit on to indicate their short term ambition:
1. This coaching change
2. Their summer transfers
3. The next round of DP signings.

I think the first choice was keeping PV, and their efforts were focused on that. Not sure if that inevitably had to hinder the search for option B though.

Cryptic is one thing, obtuse is another.

I'm sorry I just don't understand bashing a move before we see how it shakes out. I was not in the Vieira camp when he was hired. He grew on me. I think he was a better manager and more tactically aware than Jason Kreis who many still believe to be a top MLS manager.

If it was up to me, I loved the Berhalter idea. Make him a Godfather offer. I think he's getting the USMNT job so he'd probably say no, but that would be the outsider who probably plays closest to the City Way.

This guy is a current assistant at a top side in the world. He's coached development sides. He's led front offices and scouting departments. This team mostly coaches itself anyway.

Considering Porter's MLS knowledge and understanding of the playoff system and what it takes to win it, I would take him as an interim though the end of the season. I'm not sure how I feel about him long term in MLS 3.0 when we are trying to attract young South Americans and scout internationally.

Arena - just no. The man should never work again.

Can you really say that for certain though? I mean, out-of-work managers will always jump at the chance of taking up a - say - newly-vacated Premier League managerial post and sign up in only a few days because they know what job they want and as soon as they get an opportunity their potential employer will demand an instant answer. With a man who has not yet committed himself to move from coaching to managing, and with a club not demanding same-day answers, that process may take over a week.

Only a few posts up it was observed that this same man watched two Union games before to decide on whether to take up a (non-managerial, admittedly) post with them. Why is it you suddenly assume that this time round he would have been willing to decide on whether to take the job within hours of being offered it, and therefore assume that his consideration late in the decision-making process means that he definitely was not the first choice?

Villa would have Porter dumped in the Hudson River by July 4th Fireworks.

PV seeing the last few games out didn't seem all that strange to me, he was still negotiating with Nice. Even if it was always going to be Borrell, he didn't immediately have a staff, know our roster like PV and his team did, have any of the prep work done on opponents that PV and his team did. Unless you think PV started showing up at work and not doing his job appropriately (as a competitor his whole life I seriously doubt this), I don't see how this wasn't the better way to do things.

Eh...... despite what was announced yesterday, the physical attendance looked pretty bad for a sexy top of the standings matchup at a decent time, and there were a lot of Atlantans. I don't think CFG should bet on this market being happy as a feeder club for players and managers, even if that's MLS reality at the moment. Without winning and recognizable stars in Yankee Stadium, attendance could get decidedly not pretty.

Interesting question would be if Borrell has been around the last couple of weeks. For Steven Groff to get that scoop is interesting to me.

And adam adam - sorry if I'm coming across as argumentative. I'm not trying to be. I just really don't want an MLS retread. I like that CFG uses the New York project as a lab for new ideas and managers. I think any decent manager could do well here if they understand the talent and the style. Kreis did neither. And he got underneath Villa's skin.

Because with the Union, he’d be going to an absolute unknown with regard to employer, and with NYCFC he’s still in the CFG system. That’s a big difference to a company man.

Our success will always be limited playing at Yankee Stadium. That used to be an opinion, but I think that's a fact now. The casual fans I speak with mention two things to me when the club comes up - the original DPs and Yankee Stadium.

Big question to ask now, since it seemed to be a big deal with why Vieira was hired, is what sort of cache does Borrell hold to sway future players to come to NYCFC???? Are star players going to be impressed with a guy that didn’t have a playing career (like Vieira) to make up for their lack of managerial experience?

He’s worked w the best at Barca, Liverpool, & Man City. That’s a pretty respectable pedigree.

Counterpoint - doesn't CFG do that for the manager?

Maxi makes 2.5 more than Berget. Is he 2.5x the player?

You can't just be critical of some and not others from a salary perspective. Maxi was the second highest paid player on the pitch today.
Maxi has more talent in his little toe than berget has in his whole being . Even the announcers on TV were saying they don't understand what Viera sees in Berget!!!! and those are homer announcers.
