Nycfc V Cosmos Postgame & Motm

By FIFA standards, it is a draw.

Even in the World Cup, a game determined by PKs has no winner - officially.

Here comes the optimism:

Poku seems to be able to play the less-advanced striker role. He won't need to wander back so much, but can get the ball at his feet with hopefully Villa in front of him and two guys making runs past him. He's really had to get the ball away from , and while he's not fast, his strides and his dribbles are long, which makes him really hard to play off his ball. Props on his finishing, but also on Alvarez' chip and RJ Allen's cross.

Jeb Brovsky was made for this match, somehow. He came up with tackle after tackle and looked fresh in the 120th min. Must be incredibly well conditioned, and really shut down the entire left side of the field. Really promising. Not to mention the PK he earned. If he didn't go down so easily, he may have been able to score that one, but something something hindsight something.

Facey played pretty well during the run of play, coming up with some huge tackles, as well, though it was his man who scored both goals (one of which KWS completely whiffed on clearing, the second one). For being small, he plays with a mean streak and made some really difficult tackles in dangerous areas.

Mix played well, albeit his surrounding cast wasn't quite what he's expecting most nights, and I thought he possessed the ball well and defensively was pesky as we've known him to be. I wouldn't be surprised to see him starting Sunday.

Also thought Jacobson played the best game I can remember. Possessed well, played the ball forward, was recognizable out there. Hopefully that's something he can continue going forward.

I wouldn't worry too much about this game. Anyone who's played knows that playing on turf as opposed to pristine grass is not at all the same. It looked like they were playing with a kickball, and the turf really makes the ball "stick" as opposed to wet grass. You could tell from the get-go, it just looked awkward. Our talent was better, but no one looked like they were 100% ready for that environment (bad lighting, lacrosse lines, etc.). We won't have this problem when we have a stadium of our own.

Happy Villa sat. You don't roll out your $8mil player to play on a surface like that. There's a reason every player in the WWC wanted grass and not turf. We'll need him to make the playoffs -- the run continues Saturday.

Missed the game, for various reasons including, "I had a bad feeling" about it combined with inconvenience. Someone posted a clip of Poku's first goal on his thread and OMG people that was amazing. I really didn't think I'd see something like that from this team for a few years. Even Villa and that guy who's eventually going to show up don't make that sort of play.* I did follow the game via app updates on my phone and occasionally checked into the shoutbox here. I have to side with the people criticizing the subs. They had me scratching my head, especially as by not watching the game the announcers couldn't confuse me and I knew we used all 3 in odd ways.
* I've seen Villa bicycle kicks but in open space.

Eliminations hurt even when you don't watch. Losing to a lower league team in our first round sucks, even if the Cosmos have quality and are the class of that league. The sniping here is worse than during the last week of the 10-game winless streak. We've a right to be pissed, and Toronto is going to be tough.

I just read through a bunch of pages, so this is a general response to an argument I've seen crop up in a number of posts.

"You never plan for a game to go to penalties when you're up 2-0"

That's pretty true, you'd have to be pretty defeatist to do that.

"You never plan for penalties when you're up 2-1 in the 86th minute" (that one was doctorhoosier)

Well you damn well should be when you have already given up a late goal and they've done nothing but press dangerously since then. I was planning for penalties sitting at home. Cosmos wanted this game, we have a history of giving up late goals, we were absorbing a lot of attacks late, our defense was shit by that point (thanks in part to swapping out half the backline for weaker players, and don't give me that we don't have the depth--you can't have it both ways, either we lack depth and had shit subs so Kreis should have been prepared or they were solid choices, which clearly they were not). The list goes on and on, but the point is that if you couldn't see a very real possibility of this going all the way to penalties by the 80th minute you should probably get your eyes checked.

Well this quote just exudes the right amount of defeatism:
"“It’s disappointing for sure, probably most of all because you go through 120 minutes and penalties,” NYCFC coach Jason Kreis said. “You probably look back at it and say if we knew we were going to lose, I’d probably prefer to have done it in the first 90 minutes since we’ve got a very important game on Saturday.”

A half-dozen offensive linemen from the NFL NFC could have taken better penalty kicks.

He's gone full moron. And you never go full moron.

Don't short Kreis. He changed 3/4 of the back line, not half because Facey had to move over for Wingdingshittert.

What part of that isn't common sense? He's disappointed to lose, so how is that possibly defeatism? If we'd known we were going to lose, would you personally have rather lost in 90 or 120?

Because it's like wishing for a do-over time machine but using it not to change outcomes, only ancillary conditions.
"If I knew my loved one's plane was going to crash I would have bought them first class tickets so their last hours would be more comfortable."

The guy has to answer "how could this happen" questions after a loss that must have been personally devastating to him. His players had multiple chances to prevent it from happening. As their leader it's not really helpful to say "The thing I'd do differently is not having Mullins/Grabavoy/Ballouchy/Alvarez blow massive opportunities"

Well, all that talk about taking this game seriously, as serious as any other game was just BS. I knew it as soon as we subbed out Poku and Hernandez that we were going to lose.

As a whole these players are absolute trash and really looking forward to not seeing them ever again in any type of match for us.

Wingert - Just absolutely horrible, as soon as he came in, I said oh SHIT no way....Wingert along with Grabavoy, and a few others are the sort of MLS scrubs rejects that will be on the Cosmos in 2 years time maybe sooner.

Alvarez - I don't care that he had the assist on the second Poku goal. As soon as he stepped up I knew it was going to be a bad PK. Who the heck allowed him to take that PK over Mix or even Ballouchy?????????

As a whole, this is how bad the Cosmos are, all it took was one beast Midfielder (Poku) to shut them down. Look last night was a great game but to act like the Cosmos with that roster are better then Redbull or NYCFC, like their head coach is acting and fans, is ridiculous. They would be lucky to win 2 games in a full MLS season with facing MLS teams week in and week out with their roster the way it is right now.

Personally, I think the idea of actually sacking Kreis would be like going “full moron”. What would that accomplish right now? We haven’t even played an entire season yet – our first one, I might add. We don’t have a full squad and only one DP playing. Would we really want to start from scratch with a new coach? Who would we even replace him with?

I understand that people are incensed with some of his decisions and I’m not saying they aren’t warranted or valid at times, but it’s easy for us to say in retrospect, be it from our couch, seats, or bleachers, what was a good idea and what wasn’t. Many of you are incredibly intelligent when it comes to analyzing the game and I’ve been doing my best to keep up and learn more.

I’m really not one to write long-winded responses, but this particular issue just gets under my skin. We should have been poised from the beginning to expect the possibility that this could be a rough season.

I suppose my takeaway from these kinds of responses is at least a positive one, which, as an eternal optimist, can be perceived as annoying at times. The fact that many of us care so much about this team and hold them to such a high standard is encouraging.

I'll go back to posting stupid gifs and pictures now
