NYCFC v Philly

Given Vieira's emphasis on consistency, I think we'll see a return to the W-M we were using earlier in the season. Zero reason to think EJ gets a start this week.

He was apparently asked about it at the Brooklyn meet-and-greet and it sounded like that formation is shelved for the time being:
When asked about the 3-4-3 formation he said that he would go back to that at some point, but felt that right now it was important to first get the balance right between offense and defense before going back to that formation, though he seemed to agree with the idea that Pirlo is better with someone like Bravo next to him.

I do not think that Philly is as good as they've been described. Winning on a FK that shouldn't've been allowed, beating a Larin-less OCSC. Still, they've lost more games than we have, so here's to getting 3 points.
I totally agree. CJ Sapong is really turning into a good and dangerous player and Barnetta's free kick was totally sick, but they have pretty much been out played whenever I have seen them. I am predicting 60% possession and 16 shots for NYCFC.

As long as 2/3 of the shots are actually on goal forcing a save rather than those sky-high FG attempts that Villa and others try every game.

Their new young goalie has also been playing out of his mind. If you see highlights of some matches, it's the Philly defense getting shredded and him coming to save the day. He's keeping them in games, and then they seem to be getting some breaks and fortunate calls. Hopefully we can find a way around him.

That last part about trying TMac on the LW is interesting to me. I'm not sure it would be best, but considering the recent play of our wingers, I feel like its worth a shot.

PV wants our wingers to cut inside, so having TMac on the left and cutting in to his right foot could be beneficial. He also has the work rate and defensive capabilities to track back.

I do like the idea of giving Mix more space and freedom to do what he wants. However, it would be interesting to see how our defensive tactics would change with a move to 2 CDMs. Currently, we have both TMac and Mix pressing high and the wingers tracking further back. I'll defer to someone who is more tactically savvy than me to go into how this works better.
On paper it would be two CDMs, but since one of them is Pirlo, it's really only one. The reason I think this may be better is that when Pirlo was with Juve, at least with their run to the CL Final and ownership of Serie A, he was in a midfield with Vidal and Pogba. Vidal and Pogba were able to run for days and either one could help out against a counter if Pirlo was caught upfield or out of position. I believe it will give Pirlo the ability to spread the ball around better with two middies who can run relatively well. Basically, Mix (Pogba) and Bravo (Vidal) are the much lesser versions of the Juve (and ex-Juve) midfielders.

The CBs and CDM would basically create a triangle, thwarting counters and other offensive chances. when Hernandez decides to run upfield and stop a pass, only to be caught out of position, Brillant won't be left alone on an island as Bravo will be tracking back to cover Hernandez or wherever the next pass has gone, slowing play and allowing either our fullbacks or Mix to help in tracking back and stifling the initial counter.

Since LW has been so terrible for us, I figure it's worth a try to put Mac out there. We don't have too much depth, so why not try it out the next two or three games until Harrison has the lungs to go a full 90 or 70-80 minutes. TT just makes the same run, and Mendoza was even worse coming down the left than the right side. Mac has the knowledge to put himself in the right spot at the right time, and possibly send in a decent cross for Villa to bury.

Well, if their young goalie is currently playing out of his mind, then we're definitely going to lose, because NYCFC makes any goalie have a career day with highlight reel saves..... doomed.... we're doomed....

I thought Juve used 4 midfielders with Marchisio as well? Or was that just Pirlo's last season there?

Thanks. I either missed or forgot about that quote. It's interesting because I think the W-M (or at least a 3 man backline) is the clearest way to getting Bravo & Pirlo together without taking off anyone we all consider must-starts.

That may be true, I honestly don't watch much of Serie A, but from the CL games I watched it seemed like Pogba and Vidal were teamed up with Pirlo and that was it. Maybe I missed Marchisio in there too.

I looked on uefa.com match reports and you were right, looks like Marchisio was included in the midfield as well. Damn, now I have to think up another formation hahaha

. . . . . . . . . .Saunders
Iraola - Hernandez - Bravo - Mata
. . . Mix - Pirlo - MacNaMullet
Shelton - - - Villa - - - TonyTiger
I like this lineup best, I think. I'm willing to give Josh one more game before I start thinking he's a true, true problem. I think the biggest concern is Mac tracking back for Mata, which he screwed up on the 3rd Columbus goal last weekend. I don't think Philly can put 4 forward that are better than Finley, Kamara, Meram and Higuain, so maybe we'll be allowed to make some of those mistakes this weekend as opposed to last, and not get burned as badly.

Any lineup without Mendoza is fine with me. His poor passing, instance on trying to take defenders 1v1, and how the ball dies at his feet absolutely kill us in the final third. I appreciate his speed and his left foot, but he's done more harm than he has helped.

One of the reasons this IS a great lineup is because we can turn this into a 3-4-3 at the drop of a dime without needing to use a sub, allowing us to press higher, get more pressure and win back the ball. Amoeba football at its best.

Josh Saunders' 53.8% save percentage is the lowest in MLS. Behind even Luis Robles who's allowed in more goals.

http://stats.washingtonpost.com/mls/player_leaders.asp?category=103

He's ranked 19th out of 20th in saves made too.

I looked at that list of keepers and said "who for sure would I rather have in net than Saunders?"

Irwin, Frei, Rimando, Melia, Blake, Seitz, Bush, MacMath, Ousted, Shuttleworth, Clark, Bingham, Kwarasey, Robles

Yup. He's a bottom keeper in the league, and it's not like he is a young keeper they are grooming either.

So essentially for every two shots on goal, one is scored ??? Oh FFS, how can the team even consider to play him game after game with a stat like that ?!? Even a simpleton can see those odds don't favor the good guys...
it really is shocking, but I guess given that he's got a strong leg......NVM
