Official 2016 Nycfc Roster Discussion Thread

Between TT, Shelton, Harrison, Tommy Mac and Mattarita (who I think will play more LW than LB this year), I think we look pretty good for wingers actually. Which is pretty crazy considering how little width we had last year! I'm more worried about our depth at centre back, where there are more question marks than I'm comfortable with at this point of the year, and up front, where we will look extremely lightweight if Villa gets another bad injury.
Lot of interesting possibilities. McNamara is the only known commodity and I think it is pretty clear that he is not a starting winger on a good team.

Which of the other four do people thing has the best season on the wing? I put up a poll on Twitter - genuinely not sure who I'd vote for, in part because I'm not sure where Matarrita lands.

Matarrita is my bet.

I'd be shocked if Matarrita plays LW all year. He is way too valuable as a fullback.

I think it makes sense. He seems to have the speed and the skills to excel on the wing. Let Martinez and Allen hold down the LB spot. Let Matarrita play the wing and they can overlap all game without any fall off on D. Additionally having a fast wing with considerable defensive skills can help cover some of our defensive issues in the midfield caused by starting both Pirlo and Lampard.

I think we saw last year how a shitty LB hurt us defensively. RJ Allen cannot play LB in my opinion, and I think Martinez will end up being a decent back up. Also, playing Matarrita at LW means you are taking Poku or Mix off the field. Good LBs are harder to come by than good LWs

I don't think necessarily that playing Matarrita at LW means Poku or Mix are off the field. I think the one it affects most will be Big Apple Jack. Villa looks to be entrenched as CF in the 4-3-3. The only way which I could see the selection of forwards affecting playing time for Poku and Mix is if Poku was to play a False 9 or play out on the RW. And he has never done that, and based on PV's previous comments, it doesn't sound like PV wants him there.

But who do you play at LW? It was the spot I'm most skeptical about in the 4-3-3. Our options without Matarrita seem to be Harrison and McNamara, and I think McNamara is a bit out of position there.

Also, Matarrita is an attacking fullback and offensive-minded. Fullback is his secondary position, as he was kind of forced there for playing time on his national team. We also are in dire need of some defense-first players in the starting XI.

Matarrita might be our best left back, but he's also probably our best left wing, and he might be even better at the latter position. I could see PV putting him at either or both.

LW is the only spot I can see for Poku in the staring lineup. Vieira wants his wings to cut in, so I don;t think a true sideline type winger is what he is looking for.

Even though it's still early, I think it's crystal clear that Vieira sees Poku as a central midfielder all the way, and one of his best three midfielders. I highly, highly doubt Poku plays anywhere but central midfield.

This is the list of players that have played wing since Vieira has been setting the lineup:

McNamara (LW v Puerto Rico)
Shelton (RW v Puerto Rico; RW v OKC)
Taylor (RW v FGCU; RW v OKC)
Agyiri (RW v FGCU)
Sane (LW v FGCU)
Ballouchy (LW v FGCU; LW v OKC)
Matarrita (LW v OKC)

I think most people on this board are comfortable with either Shelton, Taylor, or both as a potential starter at RW.

On the left side, we've seen two trialists, Ballouchy (also played some at CM), McNamara (also played some at CM), and Matarrita (also played some at LB).

To me, I think the question is whether you go with Matarrita at LW right away, or keep him at LB and have McNamara fill in as a LW until Harrison is healthy and earns the job. If we go with the latter plan, that seems like a real weak spot in our lineup.

I'll say one more time that I'm pretty sure Vieira has settled on what position most of our starters play and won't force guys out of position just to play the 4-3-3. So to me, I'm more interested in when he'll try a different formation and what that would look like. I think he's more likely to conclude that a 4-3-3 is not our best formation by the end of preseason rather than force it.

I agree your breakdown of the wing spot. The unmentioned reality is that is slots Mix and Poku as CMs in the 4-3-3 and we won't see them on the wings unless we are short due to injury. People are going to freak out because it means Mix and Poku won't start every game. But as you and others have mentioned I still think there are plenty of min to go around. I expect to see a midfield rotation of Lampard, Pirlo, Mix, Poku, and whomever wins the battle between Lopez/Bravo/Jacobson to fill the pure CDM role when needed. It seems like a log jam until you consider:

1. Lampard and Pirlo are old and their min are going to be managed carefully
2. Lampard and Pirlo are old likely to miss some time from injuries
3. Mix, Pirlo and possibly Poku are likely to miss time on national team duty
4. Hopefully we make a run in the open cup

There will be outcry from the Poku must start every game crowd but it already seems like a huge improvement over last year. Poku will see way more time, Mix will be played in his natural position and we won't need to run our DPs into the ground. PV has mentioned in numerous interviews that he is someone who admires coaches that game plan for each opponent. I fully expect him to rotate the mids based on match ups.

Great take. Our depth at midfield should be a source of comfort, not a source of stress as it seems to some prognosticators. I love it.

Your talking about Angelino right? :D

What is the current status on our international slot count? Last I knew we were well over and would need to acquire a slot or two. When is the deadline for that? Looks like Colorado just snagged one:

It's 39 minutes until March 2 and no news out of NYCFC or MLS about any change to our roster. Has Jack Harrison become a US Citizen? Who was loaned to Wilmington? Is something being placed on the DL? Have we made a trade for more international spots?

It's NYCFC. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they didn't make it public until right before kickoff in Chicago.

New York City FC announced that the Club has acquired Shannon Gomez on a one-year loan from W Connection with an option to purchase ahead of the 2017 MLS season. The loan is pending ITC.

Gomez, a 19 year-old Trinidad & Tobago senior international and US resident, has been training with the Club for the duration of the Club’s final pre-season training camp in Sarasota, Florida and will not occupy an international player spot on the New York City FC roster.
