Over 600,000 viewers for our disaster.........

Hey, it was only 595,000
Those are the paying viewers. The other 5k quoted by the OP are using illegal feeds. It may seem like there were more watching, and we may not agree with the tabulation methods, but it's how the numbers are counted, and other networks do it to.

A missed opportunity for sure, but good thing the club is young, New York City FC will have its time to shine again. Especially in its own stadium. People who are truly with the club will always be with the club, and that's all that really matters.

I want to know how many people watched the FA Cup final that aired just before . . . and if Fox would have gotten those numbers for an MLS game if they didn't have the FA Cup final as the lead-in.

oops, looks like I found my answer:

For those MLS and FOX executives hoping that the FA Cup viewers would stick around to watch the New York City-New York Red Bulls game, they would have been disappointed by the fact that 41% of the average viewing audience that watched Manchester United beat Crystal Palace didn’t watch the Hudson River derby. The average viewing audience for the FA Cup Final was 1,018,000 compared to the average viewing audience of 595,000 for NYCFC-New York Red Bulls.

The New York derby viewing audience number is disappointing especially when you consider that New York City is the number one TV market in the United States. There are 7.3 million homes that have televisions in New York, which represents 6.5% of the total in the USA.

Probably wouldn't have. But that's part of the point of putting this big derby after the FA Cup. To get new eyes on the league in a big, big rivalry game that NYCFC unfortunately capitulated in. It is what it is, though, gotta move forward.

To be fair, FS1 is not the #1 sports network in the US, so even with a game in the #1 TV market, people with don't have access to FS1 or don't normally tune into it or can't give up an entire afternoon to watching football. I'd be more curious what the numbers would be if NBC showed the Cup game followed by NYCFC, or if the game was earlier in the day - 10am Cup & 12:30 NYCFC ???

The 595,000 number is a full game average.
I would also like to see the derby ratings by first 20 minutes, then at the half, then at the end. I suspect the ratings were higher at the beginning as maybe even most FA viewers decided to give the game a shot. By halftime it was 3-0 and neutral viewers almost certainly gave up.

It was on Big Fox.
