I am kind of confused by this coaching staff they're putting together. It's starting to seem slapdash, like they're frantically appointing coaches because of how late the coach was hired, but why isn't Deila bringing along people he wants? Why is this coaching staff being chosen for him? I hope they all work well together because this is a strange coaching staff they're putting together.

It's interesting. One advantage is that they are putting together a staff familiar with the City way to play. If we are committed to playing City football, this ensures that RD can instill his own direction and style, but with sufficient input from family coaches.

Another advantage is that we are building a safety net for the future in case RD has a reason to leave and/or doesn't work out. The assistants won't be tethered to him. In fact, they likely are being groomed to help this team for the long term. Maybe CFG has learned something from the PV and DT departures.

That's a very valid point. But is this OK with Deila? Will the coaching staff that meets each other for the first time on Saturday work well together? This is not a normal way to build a coaching staff, and it could potentially not work out.

Having company men as his assistants will tie his hands - who is he supposed to confide in if CFG/et al give him game/tactic/roster orders that he doesn’t agree with? He needs guys that will support his decisions and not the company’s.

Right -- this wouldn't have been something they sprung on him after he accepted. My point is that I hope he was involved in the interviewing/recruitment process. Because this is certainly an unusual arrangement, and the first time our team has tried something like this.

There are legit, smart reasons for doing it this way, I just hope this staff isn't mismatched and works well together.

Good points! But he didn’t bring (1) single assistant coach with him...... not (1). How many professional coaches don’t bring in any of their people as assistants, in any sport? An article like this was kind of inevitable.

Still, it is disappointing that they don't provide much agency to Nick Cushing - the person whose ultimate decision it is to leave or stay. After questioning CFG's commitment to the women's team, they bury the part where Cushing himself says he wanted to move on. It seems most likely to me that he was ready to return to the men's game and this was the opportunity that made the most sense.

The timing is unfortunate, and I guess I can understand if fans of the Man City team think they got "Vieiraed" - but this seems more about CFG trying to keep a valued employee happy despite awkward timing than anything else.
