It would have been nice to bring someone in with some clout for attracting some talent though. Not sure if he moves the needle.

Eh. I think you underrate how big of a deal it is to hire the ex manager of Celtic. That’s a huge job. I know he ended up back in a shit league but it’s a big deal to be Celtic manager.

I don't disagree with the idea that RD does not have superstar drawing power. But I don't think either PV or DT had big-name DP drawing power. Some of our younger guys did peripherally mention that they appreciated the opportunity to learn from a former player like PV, and I am sure others enjoyed learning DT's advanced tactics. But no top tier superstar would have been drawn to New York to play for either of them. In fact, Villa seemed to clash with DT which suggested there could have been a lack of respect or trust, etc. With some exceptions depending on a prospective player in question (more so for PV based upon his player pedigree), I don't see a big difference in drawing ability amongst the three.I guess my biggest concern is RD doesn't share the same player pedigree (Vieira) nor the coaching pedigree (Dome; being Pep's assistant for years qualifies as pedigree in my book) which our previous two managers did. I also don't see him as being any kind of draw to a big-name DP because of the aforementioned reasons.
I think we are overrating how big of a deal the name or stature of a manager is in signing players. Sure, guys like Tata and others will attract certain players just on their name alone, but I get the sense that most players, when they care about a manager, is about their style of play and/or personality. Not because they are a big name. Then you throw in all the other variables such as available playing time, league stature, club stature, chance to win trophies, how they like the city, perhaps potential teammates.Eh. I don't think Bob Bradley was necessarily a big name outside the US and he brought in Vela and Rossi (I'm sure there may have been a slight new club in LA bump there). Vanney definitely wasn't a big name when he brought in Giovinco. I doubt Sigi Schmid was a big name when Lodeiro came, and while Schmetzer has had success in MLS, is he really a big name that attracted Ruidiaz?
Maybe pirlo and lampard, but I don't think Villa signed purely for money reasons. I think he wanted to be part of a new team, and he had ambitions elsewhere too (a la QBFC and his academy stuff.)The three biggest names we've ever had all signed for us under a manager with essentially zero brand recognition outside of Utah.
I've no idea what in$pired them to $till join, but maybe $omeone ha$ an idea.

That alone attributes to him finding NYC an attractive destination - I can see others too thinking that in the future.
I can't quite remember, but I wouldn't be too surprised as I think when Vieira and Torrent were hired in the past, they just brought their own staff with, kind of "at one time" so there were many new assistant coaches being "hired" at once.New York City FC Names Nick Cushing as Assistant Coach | New York City FC

Could be interesting what the end game here is with this hiring though. Seeing as if Ronny were to leave or get sacked Cushing would be staying because he’s not essentially part of the team RD brought with him like PV and Dome.New York City FC Names Nick Cushing as Assistant Coach | New York City FC
