Ronny Deila Named NYCFC Head Coach / Deila Joins Standard Liège

Regardless of these stats, Club Brugge signed him to get them back to the top. Last season they finished 4th which is quite unacceptable for their level in the past decade or so. Two seasons ago they finished on 72 points before the split, last year at 59, and this year 51 (less teams, so just about equal with 59 from last year) and that looks highly unlikely they'll finish top or even top two after the split... - meaning that this was always on the cards.

I get that it is a results business, expectations (esp. for big clubs in small to medium leagues) and all that. I'm also not all that sorry for Ronny. World soccer is an ongoing demonstration of the Peter Principle in action for both players and coaches and if anything I find it amusing when yet another one moves somewhere bigger and fails or languishes on the bench. But I also find the velocity with which many European clubs cycle through managers to be a bit much and likely counterproductive.

I wasn't able to attend that, but some of the themes sounded on track with that discussion from what I've heard.

ETA: I have heard that there was some friction between the FO and Deila since Deila didn't really run things the CFG way.

I mean I know the CFG way has worked for them elsewhere, but Deila kind of stands out among NYCFC coaches.

I had been expecting Atlanta to find that magic at some point and go on a streak to salvage the season. Hot/cold streaks were really what defined his tenure with us (well, that one thing he got us during one of those hot streaks is kind of memorable) and I expected to see it down there. Too bad for him, but I hope coaches use this as a lesson and start seeing more value at building a lasting legacy at a single club, as opposed to trying to ladder up after short stints.

Both could make worse decisions.

But Ronny needs to learn how to win on the road in MLS. His only decent road record with us was in 2020 when there were empty stands. This year Atlanta was abysmal on the road even accounting for their overall record and quality. I don't know what the trick is but our success with him on the road in the playoffs in 2021 was an absolute anomaly.
