Currently watching The Boys. Just finished The Expanse. Big sci-fi nerd and it was on BSG level IMHO.
The Expanse is great. Also watched the Boys. Big sci-fi nerd here too. i recently did a stargate marathon and went through SG-1 and Atlantis. awesome shows. undomesticated equines could not remove me.
The Stargate series are underrated gems, IMO. Obviously they were successful and ran for years, but they don't seem to get the serious SciFi fan love.If you have access to Stargate Universe you should watch that. It was cancelled after just 2 Seasons and has no real ending, but worthwhile anyway. They were trying to take SG into a grittier, darker BSG type atmosphere.
Also looking forward to the next season of the Expanse coming in December.
I tried universe but couldn't get into it. SG-1 and Atlantis had great stories, comedy, and perspective on human development. They also tied really well together with all the cross overs. Universe seemed like they tried too hard and kind of lost the formula. I think the fact that they went to the darker path with Universe is what killed it, as SG fans weren't really looking for that.
Word on the interwebz is they are doing a revival for stargate tv series. though it'd probably end up being on a streaming service and not on network TV, which is fine. i would love for them to do more stories that involved the races we don't know much about and followups on the asgaard and their rebel(?) faction. So many paths they could take if they did a revival.

I came to it late. Watched the first couple of seasons 2-3 years ago. Picked it up again this past summer and just finished.
The first two seasons are good. The third season is very good. The fourth season is great, and the fifth season is legendary.

Without spoiling, I'm 2 episodes in and it's just weird. Never read the comics & I don't read articles to explain shows. I'll give it the full season to explain itself, sine I trust the show runner. But at the moment it's very unsatisfying.
the graphic novel is really worth the read
Is that what we're calling comics now that we're adults? I have boxes and boxes of graphic novels at my parents house, my favorites were X-men, Ghost Rider, Punisher & GI-Joe. Seriously though, I probably would love to read graphic novels again, I think I saw there was a Marvel app a while back where I can download them direct to my iPad. It is about time for that mid-life crisis. I always thought it would involve a boat and not graphic novels. Maybe it can be both...

For those who never read the comics or saw the movie Watchmen, here is a truncated summary which doesn't do it justice but helps give context to the new series. There are spoilers here for the book/movie but not the series (though there are echos of many of the book/movie elements in the series). I put this together for a friend.
The main point of divergence of this universe from ours is the accidental creation of Dr. Manhattan around mid-century in a nuclear experiment gone bad. A regular man is transformed into a being who can manipulate time space and matter. He works for the US government which tips the balance of the Cold War: The US easily wins the Viet Nam war, making Nixon so popular we repeal the 22nd Amendment, and he is still President in the 80s when the book happens. Also despite the US power advantage world tensions are high and nuclear war threatens.
Also mid-century, assorted masked heroes/vigilantes start operating over 2 generations. They never form an Avenger or Justice League type team but know each other. Several years before the book, a federal law (the Keene Act (remember the name)) forces all masked crime fighters to retire. Most comply, some work for the government. Rorschach never fully retires but stays in the shadows. Rorschach is an extreme nasty right wing looney conspiracy theorist who is also quite capable and actually right occasionally. He notices that someone is killing former "masks," and investigates. One former hero known as Ozymandias, real name Adrian Veidt, survives an attempt. Veidt is an extremely rich successful super genius.
Meanwhile Dr. Manhattan who was already a pretty detached personality withdraws from Earth, loses interest in humanity, moves to Mars, and this eliminates the US power advantage over the USSR and nuclear war is even more likely. Rorschach discovers that Veidt is planning a horrific event to scare humanity into thinking we face an alien invasion from another dimension, which would forestall nuclear annihilation as everyone cooperates because of the common enemy. Veidt had been behind the attacks on other masks because he thought they might try to stop him and he faked the attempt on his own life. Rorschach, Dr. M, and some other heroes try to stop him but fail. The "alien attack" comes in the form of a giant, insane, squid with mental telepathy powers teleported into midtown Manhattan and killing millions of people both directly and through a sort of mind blast. Just accept it.
Rorschach, for all his many and extreme flaws, is a man of principle and announces his intent to reveal what happened. His fellow masks including Dr. M choose pragmatism and since the millions of people are already dead they decide to become co-conspirators after the fact. Manhattan kills Rorschach to keep him from telling the world. Final scene is someone working for a National Enquirer type newspaper opening a package with Rorschach's journal which he had previously mailed. Presumably they go on to print the story but nobody believes it because both the publication and Rorschach were nut jobs.

thanks. Now some of the first 2 episodes makes a bit more sense with that context. I’m a little annoyed they don’t provide any of that context for the general public who haven’t seen the film or read the books. A new series should be able to stand on its own. But i digress. I realLy appreciate the synopsis. And reccomend it to anyone before watching the series.
