I'm pretty confident we will literally win a cup before them. I'm ridiculously confident we will proportionally win a cup before them.

Maybe that wasn't the correct phrasing I meant I'm very confident even if they somehow win something before we do that we will win a cup within less years of our existence than they win their first one.

Even if we don't win one first, we will win one faster.Maybe that wasn't the correct phrasing I meant I'm very confident even if they somehow win something before we do that we will win a cup within less years of our existence than they win their first one.
I personally value the Supporter's Shield, but there is something to the fact that RB is the only original team to not have ever won either the MLS Cup or the US Open Cup. In 22 years, they have come up empty on 43 attempts, and likely 44 because I cannot see them winning the MLS Cup this year.Frankly, I found all the talking last night about how the Cows were trying to win their first major trophy to be complete bullshit. I know we like to tease them about the same point, but the Supporters' Shield is a major trophy - at least as important as the US Open Cup. The ESPN guys were just repeating complete crap in order to advance a dramatic storyline (because that's what ESPN does). Problem is that it creates false impressions. Even Twellman couldn't abide by it and basically called it bullshit early in the broadcast.
I just don't understand.
How are you supposed to enjoy your energy drink if you don't have any cups?
You guys recall the seats at Red Bull Arena? Forget about cups... they don't even have cup holders! We have to make that into a tifo
the Supporters' Shield is a major trophy
This is where we entirely disagree. There are exactly three major trophies an MLS club can possible win, they are.
1. MLS Cup - Won every year.
2. CONCACAF Champions league, won by MLS clubs vanishingly rarely.
3. Club World Cup trophy - never won by an MLS team.
The minor trophies are
Supporters shield: .2 of a trophy.
US Open Cup: .5 of a trophy (because it affords access to the CCL)
In American sporting culture winning the regular season is your ticket to home field in the playoffs, we've imported enough European sporting culture by actually bothering to give out an award for the damn thing. And need I remind you the Supporters Shield isn't a sanctioned trophy, it is literally given out by the fan base to winning teams, MLS the corporate entity officially barely recognizes its existence.
The US open cup is a secondary competition of secondary importance.
The funny thing about the CCL and Club World Cup is that they can both be reduced in importance by time and events. If an MLS team has won the CCL ever year to 10-20 years then it becomes a lower importance trophy again, because the competition has lessened. The same thing can happen with the Club World Cup, though I foresee that competition becoming a very very important one as its the only real path that future, very good, MLS teams can play their European counterparts. It might be 30 years from now, but the underlying concept, not current format, has the potential to equal or surpass the UEFA Champions League.
Whew. I was worried we'd win a cup only to find out it was figurative!I'm pretty confident we will literally win a cup before them. I'm ridiculously confident we will proportionally win a cup before them.
Yes. I also believe that counts as "official recognition."Except for this year because of the changes in the tourney, didn't the winner of the Shield get an entry to the CONCACAF cup? That's kind of important, no?

Its just flawed without a balanced schedule.Yeah, I won't pretend that the Supporter's Shield isn't important. Its quite an accomplishment. Its not the "better prize", but there's no reason to belittle it at all really.
The league and its fans have determined that MLS Cup is the ultimate achievement, and the US Open Cup is as well. So teams prepare in that manner and gear towards those achievements. But I don't think the Shield is necessarily a "participation trophy".
