If you are comfortable in a world where inappropriateness knows no (or few) bounds ... Big Mouth.

Fucking hilarious.

Wife and I are 3 episodes into Succession, and though kind of intriguing and well constructed, we have little interest in continuing because the characters are completely unlikable. In other shows, Tony Soprano, Walter White, Marty Byrde, Jax, etc. all do terrible things, but they work as anti-heroes because you still find ways to like them, and they seem human: they love and show loyalty to their family, or mob members, or club brothers, etc.

In contrast, everyone in Succession is an unmitigated asshole and every family member hates every other family member and they all treat each other with contempt. And the people outside the inner circle are no better. Nobody. Does anyone here watch it and how can you stand it? Does it change? Do we eventually find someone to identify with? Because they all just suck and I can't care what happens to them win or lose. Yet the show is very highly reviewed. Am I missing something? Or is it just a matter of taste and some people like to watch this sort of thing and I just don't.

i made it through the first season when it came out. And felt exactly the same way. I can’t get over the wealth aspect. Walter and Tony made millions. But they couldn’t spend it all without getting caught, and that was part of the game/price they paid for their lifestyle. These are just a bunch of spoiled whiny bitches born into billions. And i don’t have any desire to watch them.

sidenote: billions. I think billions is more about how money doesn’t necessarily equate to power. By the last season in billions, we had 3 main characters who all could have retired easily 10 times over, but were willing to go to jail/die destitute in an attempt to bring another main character down. They have to “win” the game. It’s their hubris, and it’s fascinating.

tying that back to succession. What is their game? Gaining control of daddy’s money? The family business. It’s their inheritance and no one is being cut off if you just behave like a mensch and thank daddy for providing such a privileged life. They’re all ungrateful assholes who should probably move away from their family to Europe or somewhere and live a life 99.999% of the world never could. they have nothing to worry about or desire and their still assholes To everyone. It’s not a fun watch.

Thanks JayH JayH and Adam. Sounds like if I don't like it yet it's not going to change, which is all I need to know.

On this point I find the Alan Ruck (the Ferris Bueller guy) character interesting. He is the closest to this. He has no interest in the business. He's just gone off not working and spending money and dating inappropriate younger women and he's only around when the series starts for the birthday and then hangs around for the health crisis. He could easily be a morally neutral character, who maybe you would not admire but at least not hate, but instead they made him pathetic and weak.

Damn. I love the show. I guess we have differing opinions about unlikable assholes. :D

Been working on The Spy starring sacha baron cohen in a serious dramatic role on netflix. I'm 5 out of 6 episodes in and I am liking it.

yeah I just finished Episode 5.
It’s decent. It’s definitely not boring.

SPOILER

Episode 5 was my least favorite. Several big eye roll moments with Cohen somehow eluding several Syrian troops.

Well the spy is based on a true story though I can't say how much of what your objecting to is factual or taking artistic liberties.

I started Jack Ryan season 2. I like the action though it's a bit ridiculous at times (this one not being based on a true story at all) and it definitely feels right leaning in someways .

I've been waiting for the Señor Robot season to end so I can binge.
Also another good Watchmen episode.

oh look, Disney+ launches today...

....and it's down

I signed up with no problem, but there is spotty ability to watch various things, especially the Mandalorian. Some people have reported watching it, but I can only get to the series page. It does not even give me a "Play" button. It does seem that if you can get any given movie started it runs fine after that.

UGH. My poor friend. He works at BAM and has spent every waking hour the last 6 months toiling to get Disney+ off the ground. I can only imagine what his day is like.

Former season ticket holder too - followed the team closely until he had to give his entire life over to Disney+.

Unfortunately for me we have the first snowstorm of the season so the Mandalorian will have to wait.

Good luck. Took me forever getting the free Disney+ from my Verizon Acct. Then it wasn't working right when I downloaded it to my Amazon Stick. Got the thing running now tho. Will wait til tonight to watch when I can concentrate.
