Ronny Deila Named NYCFC Head Coach / Deila Joins Standard Liège

Based on his preview interview, it sounds like he's not looking to shake things up drastically like dome. He made it a point to say he's thinking about evolution and not revolution. But for the moment, he is simply trying to get to know everyone better, which is understandable. I doubt we will see any major changes early on, of he's true to his word. Plus, we already play a style that he likes to play, so there shouldn't be too many changes in style. Maybe just in preferred formation and starting XI.

only Sims is listening. We don’t know if the Matt Goodman Listening Tour is being scheduled or if he’s just going to shake hands.
This year is the Sims speaking tour. He will speak to Goodman, who is launching his listening tour. Next year, the results of Sims' year one listening tour will bear fruit!

So a few notes from the meet and greet last night:
- Deila told me that he's hoping to add a couple of the academy players to the first team squad for this season. Didn't name names.
- Said he's been pleasantly surprised with the quality and togetherness of the squad so far
- In terms of transfers, he's looking to add someone on the left side of defense, and one player in midfield. He says definitively that CFG won't be signing any players he doesn't want. He was extremely complimentary about the CFG scouting network and David Lee's work.
- Deila has spoken on the phone with Patrick Vieira who has given him some advice and says they will stay in touch through the season.
- Deila says his philosophy will be more similar to Vieira's than Dome's. When asked about his playing style, he said he expects the team as it stands to play a 4231, and that he thinks the team has work to do on defense. "When the team defends well, it attacks well". He also referred to Maxi and Mitri as standout players in the team who can play between the lines, and said the team can play with offensive fullbacks and wingers.
- He made reference to several games he'd watched last season, specifically the playoff loss, where he saw specific things that can be fixed. With regards the Toronto game, he referred to the team overplaying and turning the ball over too much in the first half.
- He mingled and drank with the fans for about two hours before taking questions and generally came off as a nice, upbeat and down to earth guy. He mentioned at the end of the Q&A that he hopes he can do more sessions like it over the course of the season, making specific reference to the importance of transparency and knowing what the current thinking at the club is.

Sounds like a great event and deila sounds like a good guy. We were one of the best defenses last year but we have always been Shakey defending set pieces and have some defensive lapses that make no sense sometimes. If he can get us to overcome those weaknesses, it will definitely give us a stronger foundation to win the cup.
Agree that we tend to give the ball away cheaply way more than we should. It's something we need to work on and if we're going back to the viera style, I'm ok with that.

I was there as well. He comes off as very down to earth and was not out of place just hanging in a bar with fans. We spoke about the Champions League, he said the club is excited to play other teams and he generally seemed to be looking forward to that tournament.

I have a more sympathetic view of what happened with the playoff game at CitiField after hearing the constraints they were under and the short amount of time they had to get it together. They've definitely heard complaints about various aspects of the experience, and plan to give not only more lead time to know what seats we are given and the opportunity to swap/adjust before the first game we'll play there in April, but also to allow time to make changes based on experience before the next game we play.

This sort of thing is why the team needs to be less guarded. When you talk honestly and openly with fans, they believe you. Hard to understand, I know, but this is so key and they should do this sort of thing way more often than they do.

Haha made literally the same point to him myself. He said he'd like to. He says he's transparent by nature and the policy comes from CFG but he agrees with it. He's tried to share more in the past and gotten stung for it. But is looking to improve transparency fans in general where possible. He said they wouldn't do so if it gave them a competitive disadvantage, and this included talking about players.
