2015 Women's World Cup

They better step it up for the game against China - as of right now, I don't think they can beat Germany/France
And they'll be missing both Rapinoe and Holiday in the China match due to suspension. That said, I'm not terribly worried about the China match, though I wouldn't be surprised if it goes to PKs (and then I *would* be worried). But I agree, as I said earlier, that I have serious doubts about how the US will compete with Germany and France. At least they'll only have to play one of the two. I bet the Germany v France match coming up will be spectacular.

Assuming we get past China I would much rather play France than Germany.

Did anyone see the American Outlaws Denver page posted during the game?

Apparently like 20 seconds later the guy owned up to it and resigned from his position immediately.

I saw the apology from AOHQ but hadn't dug up the original tweet. Thanks for posting.

Yeah, I was expecting something far worse based upon Juan Arango's indignation. Guess he was just up to his same old fatuousness.

GERMANY v FRANCE

Probably the best WWC match I've seen so far, with fluid attacking play and France dominating offensively for at least 2/3 of the match.

But the big problem is finishing. France created so many chances (Germany many fewer), but it kept falling apart in the box or final third either because of poor shots or lack of support / poor runs.

Extra time looked sloppy and tired, but the aggression level stayed high. Complete, however, with another finishing problem at the end of a fantastic French attack in the 115th minute.

It seemed back early in the second half that it would have to go to PKs, and indeed it did. I feel like Germany got a let-off at the last possible second with the save against Lavogez that sent them through, but given what I saw in this match I think the US is fortunate to be facing Germany rather than France (assuming the US beats China tonight).

Agreed, one of the best WWC matches I've seen so far this year, maybe even ever. The best match though has to be USA vs. Brazil in the quarters of 2011. I guess quarterfinal matches just bring out something in the players. As players, you never want the game to go to PKs, but as television viewers it's so exciting/nerve-racking. Thank god FOX didn't move the game to FS1 for the local news and TMZ. They have 15 minutes of additional coverage thanks to going longer. I guess that means more commercials in the lead up to the USA match.

The U.S. will finally breakout in this game and prove they are the best in the world versus China. Four goals and a clean sheet for the U.S. Morgan, Morgan, Morgan, Morgan.

They look like they should have 4 goals by now but they have none.

Dominating.

This WWC seems to have a lower quality of play than I remember 4 years ago...hm.

USA v CHINA

Man, that was a grind to watch despite the US looking more cohesive as a team than they have for the whole tournament. I guess what this match lacked was an opponent.

China did pretty well closing down by piling defenders on whoever had the ball, but there was just no attacking threat and they couldn't match the US on a strength or speed level so they ran a(n attempted) high-percentage short passing game and hoped they'd be able to take advantage of set pieces or penalties.

But ugh. To come out of that only 1-0 up was a little lame. Props to China's keeper, though, for some clutch saves.

Germany vs. France should have been a semifinal...it was a quarter final.
Germany vs. USA should be the final...it's going to be a semifinal.

Does England, Australia, Japan, or Canada even have a shot at winning this thing? It's like the Western Conference vs. the Eastern Conference in the NBA. The West is so dominant.

If the U.S. would hire a real manager instead of a muppet chosen by the same players who also put themselves on the squad, it would help tremendously.

We have women capable of playing with style and poise. This team, under this configuration, is not.

Japan are the defending champs, so I think you'd have to say they have at least a shot.
England will probably lose their quarterfinal.
Australia has been a bit lucky to make it this far, but they also scored the only goal that the US has conceded in the entire tournament.
Canada? shrugguy.jpeg

England crushes the dreams of the host nation Canada with a 2-1 victory. The Tuesday semifinal will be USA-Germany; Wednesday semifinal is Japan-England.

I like our chances of winning the World Cup:
USA beat Germany: World War I, World War II
USA beat Japan: World War II
USA beat England: Revolutionary War...tied England: War of 1812
