2017 Roster Discussion

Contract runs out in June. I don't know if Celta would cancel the loan, but I would imagine he is joining midway through the year. I'm in on this.

I think FIFA rules facilitate a transfer in those cases when there are 6 months left in a contract

Speaking of rosters...not sure if posted anywhere. Goal.com writer Thomas Floyd ranked and gave analysis on the top 10 in every position.

Interestingly, he ranks Pirlo as the #1 CM in the league. Other NYCFC players made the list.

Do we need a CDM? We lost Lampard at CAM and Iraola at CDM. Why not try to pick up two high work rate box to box CMs to flank Pirlo with? Isn't that the more traditional 4-3-3 set up with Pirlo? Credit to PV for finding a way to make it work with the Iraola/Pirlo partnership but it was a bit awkward a times and you could argue teams figured out that if they pressed the back line and took both Iraola and Pirlo away we had no plan B.

Two CMs with reasonable defensive work rates and high positional IQ would give Pirlo two options to move the ball through the midfield. They can help cover when Mata goes forward, and it frees up our wings to attack and not worry so much about tracking back. Without needing as much defensive help from the wings Villa could slide to LW if we found a DP CF or we could sign an attack minded DP winger and not worry about defensive issues. If we find the right players it will essentially let us shift to a more natural 4-3-3 set up and we wont have to do all the cover up stuff we did this season like playing a CB at RB, having our LW and RW track way back on D, etc.
Definitely seems like a more nuanced idea than just using a caddy for Andrea. Without Iraola though, I would just prefer to get rid of Pirlo and play a normal 433.

Was very surprised that he ranked Brillant at CB. Not that I think Brillant is bad, but that I figured the number of goals we let in would mean none of our CBs would be ranked

while true...its just that this team loses the ball way too much for my liking and not everyone tracks back as quickly so we get exposed badly at times...that is why i wanted a CDM....i always like that position any way
I agree. I think the early season clearly showed that Pirlo as the deepest MF was a problem. We got shredded defensively in our first two road matches against Chicago and Columbus when PV was still running out the Pirlo-TMac-Mix midfield (that seems like a very long time ago). Things turned around when he started playing Bravo behind Pirlo later in April and then really picked up when it was Iraola at the end of May.

If Pirlo is here, I think you either look for someone to play behind him like we did this year, or you end up in something more akin to a 4-2-3-1 than a 4-3-3.

Personally, I would build out the midfield with some steel and athleticism, and use the DP slot on either a winger or target man forward. I don't think you necessarily need a DP level guy to fix our midfield. Think a guy like Gershon Koffie or Tony Tchani (or if you don't like them, there are other similar type guys).

Then, next year when Pirlo is gone, use that DP spot a MF playmaker type.

I was thinking the same.

Maybe our expectations were too high, but I would never consider him a top 10.

Rossi makes about $1.8 Million currently. I guess you could fit him in as a non DP if he joins in July and are only responsible for $900k in wages? You could pay down the 900k to below the DP level and still have money for a DP.

Then Pirlo falls off in 2017 and his salary hits the full cap. That could theoretically work.

Wow. That would be some next level cap management.

I've thought for months what they should do is this:

Step 1) Sign three DPs
  • DP 1 has a 3 year contract
  • DP 2 has a 3 year contract
  • DP 3 has a 2 year contract
Step 2) Make sure you spread out their salaries
  • Contract for DP 1 & 2
    • Year 1 250k
    • Year 2 250k
    • Year 3 $14.5 mil
  • What you've essentially done is back loaded their contract so they're not technically DPs in the first two years.
  • Contract for DP 3
    • Year 1 250k
    • Year 2 $9.5 mil
Step 3) Sign 2 or 3 more "DPs" using the same structure so you can have 3-6 "DPs" on the books.

Yes it flaunts the spirit of the rules but the rules are stupid.

I thought the rules spread out the salaries evenly over the years on the contract, no matter how the actual payments were structured?

Correct. ACole was the first player to loophole that mechanism of spreading it out and backending it after one year (of achieved milestones)

Actually, that was de Jong. The DP portion of his contract was conditional and not guaranteed, so it didn't get brought forward into the first year. Worth noting that he never did get the DP portion.

There's not really a way to game the system the way NYCFCfan NYCFCfan suggests. LA had a one off situation, and they didn't end up keeping the player. You have to think the next guy offered a de Jong type deal is going to be very wary given how it played out for him.

Fair enough, I'm just always trying to find the easy way to do something.

I haven't logged on in a while, but have been looking in from time to time on the forum. It's going to be a very important off season for the club. Even though the finish of the season was a disappointment, there was some very good reasons to be optimistic for next season.

The departure of Lampard, Iraola and Ballouchy does create an opportunity for the club to improve the overall depth of the squad. It's now up to the coaching staff to bring in the right players that can help the club kick on. One player I would like to see at the club would be Sami Nasri. He has said he would be interested in playing in the MLS and I am sure at some point he will. The only question is can he be tempted to come in the summer. Although he is doing very well on loan with Sevilla, I just have a feeling he could be tempted to join the club in the summer.
