2018 Roster Discussion

Not sure why we continue to carry Rawls, he's 26, and while GKs typically hit their prime a bit later he still seems a bit old to be carried as a prospect. He has never been able to displace even our backup keeper to move up to 2nd inline. I'm sure he doesn't make much but he clearly seems like a strange use of a roster spot at this point.

Eh, he's probably looking at the supplemental roster this year on a minimum salary. At that point it barely matters whether we keep him or replace him.

Depends how many roster spots we have filled. But you're correct that his salary probably won't even hit the cap if we do keep him around.

This is a good listen overall, but at 39:30 thru 45:25 they make their specific predictions for NYCFC. They predict Medina will at least match Jack's output, and voice their concern over JLew's minutes. They like our overall added depth as well.

How reputable is this podcast when it comes to talent ID? I mean I just watched a bunch of Medina highlight videos and that much trance music will have anybody feeling pretty optimistic.

They're usually pretty good. They focus a lot on youth players, and run a "listener scouting network" where people send in updates after following their games / progress. They aren't scouts, obviously, but they were spot on with a lot of the USA youngsters like Adams, and followed the U17 WC very closely.

My concern is that I can't recall a single time in preseason that Medina entered a 1v1 situation with the ball that didn't result in the defender coming away with the ball. It's a very limited sample and I'm still optimistic he's just adjusting to better defenders. On the plus side his work rate appears to be much higher than your typical attack minded winger and his passing/crossing looked crisp and accurate at times. From the highlight videos the defending in MLS looks like a considerable jump in quality from his previous league, fingers crossed he settles in and puts it together.

Yeah, I don't think we will see him taking defenders on in settled 1-1 situations as much as we saw Jack do it. Looks like an entirely different kind of player to me. He will beat people on the counterattack but otherwise maybe look to draw and pass. On the flipside I'm hoping he's more direct when it comes to distribution than Jack ever was.

$175k GAM for an international slot is just stupid. How the hell are we going to buy two more of those?
Any international players on the team have to play and get significant minutes. If they don’t, then it’s wasted capital spent incorrectly since they’re no better than a domestic play/academy player brought up that doesn’t get minutes the first year.

$175K it is. Union held NYCFC over a barrel.

Perspective: Vancouver got Tony Tchani for $150k, less than a roster spot.

Looks like the price of roster spots is going way up with more international players. Used to be $50k.

Really poor planning. We should have been buying the slots in advance. It was rumored for most of the season that we would get more TAM. It should surprise no one that more TAM would have led to more international signings. Orlando was able to get a slot from Montreal at the end of last month for 100k.

They are not good. Yanks Abroad Academy at Big Soccer is better.

They are even worse re: all things MLS. They are the “Today” show of pods. Reliably mediocre, which is about as good as you can hope for, so I listen regularly.

They are the absolute worst about parroting tropes about the PL.

Lukewarm soup decent when starving.

Began listening when they had like 5 regular hosts, and came out once a month. Now, 2 hosts, and 5 a week. So good for them.

None of this is a criticism. I like their pod. I’m distractably entertained, despite my not finding them particularly insightful or humorous.

It’s there, pretty much on schedule. Sometimes, they have a decent little breakdown of a goal or two. I enjoy it. Happy for their success. You won’t learn anything, at all.

ETA: needless to say, I have learned ktdNYCFC ktdNYCFC and I have very different standards for “good” talent appraisal. I just can’t call them good when the reports’ bases are normally limited to highlights and more regularly littered with mistakes regarding the fundamental traits of a given player.

I agree with you that they are "reliably mediocre" - when I'm half asleep on my commute to work, I like an easy soccer podcast. I don't want to hear people taking themselves way too seriously and getting me pissed off. I didn't post the pod to say "these guys are the best when it comes to talent appraisal." Nothing close. I merely said it was a good listen. They spoke about our team for 5 minutes.

So reliably mediocre is just fine with me. I'm not looking for a soccer Mensa meeting.
