2018 Roster Discussion

Just remember, if we fail to qualify for the World Cup again and Pulisic continued his development, he can still switch to Croatia...
Will he also ink-over his giant eagle/American flag tattoos?

Okay...some MLS roster rules and then some math...

Jesus Medina is a Designated Player. Thus...
  • If a Designated Player is transferred or loaned, the club will receive all amounts of the transfer or loan fee revenue until it has recouped all out-of-pocket cash payments made by the club in connection to that player prior to any sharing arrangement with the League. After such recoup, the transfer or loan of the Designated Player shall be treated as any other transfer with the club receiving three quarters (3/4) of the corresponding transfer or loan fee revenue.
The club's share of transfer or loan fee revenue may only be used as follows:
  • " The club may assign up to US$750,000 of the transfer/loan revenue as General Allocation Money. (In the case of Designated Players, such assignment of Allocation Money can only take place after the club has received 100% of their out-of-pocket investment)
  • The remaining balance of the club's share (if any), and which cannot be traded, will be available to be used by clubs in the following ways:
    • Against the expenses incurred by the club in relation to the costs of an existing or new Designated Player; or
    • With League approval, against an expense that (i) would not otherwise have been incurred by the club; and (ii) reasonably represents an investment in the League or club (e.g., youth development and training facilities)
Now for the math...

We paid $4M for Medina with 80% of future sale clauses, I believe according to tweets. This would net 5.944. We receive $4M to recoup the cost of the sale. That leaves a let of $1.458M after MLS gets it's share of the profit. That nets 750K GAM. The remaining $750K could be used to buy down the cost of Maxi's sale or possibly make him a TAM player. Maybe?

Sell him. $3 Million profit. What do we get out of that again? What’s the MLS. S NYCFC breakdown?

Wide players are a strength right now.

Let’s talk about Maxi. We have $750k available from the Harrison sale. This nets us $750k more of GAM.

You could use all that GAM to make Maxi a full cap hit at $500k. From a cap perspective, I don’t know how wise that is. But I believe that would be the only way to make Maxi a non-DP in the final year of his contract. He is not TAM eligible. You could use GAM NEXT summer to pay down 1/2 of his salary during the Summer 2019 window if you didn’t intend to re-sign him for 2020.

More likely scenarios involve using the GAM to purchase more young talent, specifically Americans. Use that money to bolster your roster this offseason by getting yourself a Brooks Lennon or Nick Lima.

I fully believe Taty will be purchased this winter outright. It just depends on the mechanism.

First Vieira comes for Medina...Then he comes for Ring and Tinnerholm and Isi

Ring is too good for MLS. He should be a DP.

I will gladly sell Tinnerholm and Isi back to Europe as good as they have been. But not until
The winter window.

I mean we did just sign Castellanos so I don't think it'll be that bad.

yea except he is out for couple of games due to injury. id wait off on sale, unless he wants to go then fine. September has so many games and there will be rotations will need medina too in case someone goes down

Just to double check the math.

First, we recoup all costs before sharing (and before GAM), so that includes salary. His salary is $650K. Pro rated over the season so far, and we've paid $410.5K.

Second, the price would be €6.5 million, which is $7.435 million. 80% of that is $5.948 million, which is the amount to cover our expenses and split with MLS (basically what you had).

Third, you subtract from the $5.948 our expenses for Jesus, which are $4.415 million for a balance of $1.533 to divide with MLS.

Fourth, MLS gets their 1/4, which leaves us with $1.15 million.

That still gets us to $750K in GAM plus extra money for a new DP.

Still not sure I would do it.

Oh, and no TAM for Maxi, as he makes $2 million and the most you can make and be a TAM player is $1.5 million.
