2018 Roster Discussion

I agree, assuming they go for a name, and I think they will, we need another Villa. Ideally 32 years old or younger with multiple near peak years left. No idea how you get someone like that in the winter, no team is parting with someone of that caliber midseason. Even Villa was a Summer signing, they just stashed him on Melborne for a few months.

By stashed, you mean sent him there and he reused to play and came right back to NY.

Now what’s our best starting lineup?

Bench: Stuver, Ofori, sweat, ibeagha, Tati, Medina, sands.

Real question is does Medina start? And if so, over Isi or Berget?

Midfield is perfect, if all healthy.

With the defensive, I'd swap Sweat for Mata just due to personal preference and wanting a bit more defense.

The front three is the biggest question. We've seen Villa more effective with Berget on the field. But if you remove Villa, you can get Medina and Isi on the wings which may be better overall for the team.

I think you leave Mata on for the same reason. In a 433, Berget doesn't have a spot with a healthy Villa, so you have to start a healthy Medina. In a 442 or a 352, he's a definite starter.

I think Yangel would be part of our best starting XI, but I can't imagine he'll be fit enough to start until maybe the playoffs.

I think he comes in at around 60 in our next match and then plays 60 in our last. And hopefully 90 for the playoffs.

Or 60 our next match. 30 for the last (since short rest w playoff match), then 90 for the playoffs.

Mata is far from perfect, but defensively Sweat is even more of a calamity. The left-back position has been the weakest point of the team for a long time now, but the club doesn't seem to feel it needs to be strengthened.

FO probably assesses the club’s streangths and weaknesses based on MLS ranking articles.

The problem with the Sweat and Mata dilemma is they are both prone to disastrous performances. Mata has higher upside, and can be used in different ways allowing us more in game tactical flexibility, but he appears to also have a higher percentage of poor matches than USMNT rising star Ben Sweat.

While I generally agree with you on this point, Sweat also does allow us some tactical flexibility as he can switch back to CB and play decently there, allowing us the ability to play 3 at the back and change the formation in front. Either switching to a more offensive formation to chase a goal. Or play with 3 CBs and use two wingbacks to be more defensive.
