2018 Roster Discussion

Something that bothers me about MLS and in particular NYCFC. We don't disclose anything about these deals. How many years are each player signed? Which years are player options? Club options? TAM? GAM?

The only team that I believe that releases this is Sporting Kansas City. I mean look at this article. So much is given to fans: https://www.sportingkc.com/post/201...ises-options-11-players-ahead-2018-mls-season

These are both fair points. I do think Chanot does provide more from an organization standpoint being in the middle over Ibby, but I think what you've both pointed out would be enough to have Ibby in the middle.
I think he would be great in the middle. Imagine how scary our backline would be with a right footed Callens.

do we even know how much GAM/ TAM each team starts with and actually has? i mean there even been cases where all of a sudden a draft pick was traded to a player and it happened months before. Or all of a sudden an international slot was sold to another team and no one even knew until an international player is signed.

i do think it must be improved, i just dont know if there are legalities tied to this ? or with players union? if player X got this and player Y says why cant he get that same type of contract with GAM/TAM etc. or just MLS just being lazy with it.

This is NBC Sports dated August 2018, but when I searched the link in the Forums, nothing came up.

Here is the article they are sourcing: https://as.com/futbol/2018/08/17/internacional/1534495096_592249.html

According to a report by Spanish outlet AS, NYCFC is not planning to renew David Villa’s contract at the end of this season.
...
The report states that, at 36 years old, Villa could potentially contemplate retirement at the end of the season, having already hung up his international boots four years ago just two caps shy of the 100 mark. According to the report, NYCFC could potentially offer him a front office role, either as a coach or executive.

These contract extensions are a mixed bag.... now we gotta hope the Curse of Saunders-TMac-RJ-Mata-Wallace doesn’t strike this trio.....

He might still be retiring at the end of the year, but not sure anything has been decided yet.

And the AS article was linked on here, just not the NBC Sports one, because it really didn’t have any new information

I’m actually a little surprised by the Johnson extension.

I guess first round draft picks are worthless now.

I guess first round draft picks are worthless now.

They've always been pretty low value. Here's a quick list of guys taken in the first round of the last five drafts who I'd say are currently better than the average MLS player. I came up with 8/105, with maybe another 20 or so in competent starter range. Some of the younger guys might get there eventually, but still, you're looking at something like a 2/3 chance that a first round pick will be basically worthless.

2014 (19 picks): Steve Birnbaum
2015 (21 picks): Cyle Larin, Tim Parker, Cristian Roldan
2016 (20 picks): Jack Harrison, Keegan Rosenberry
2017 (22 picks): Lalas Abubakar, Julian Gressel
2018 (23 picks): none yet
