I agree with this. I don't think this club drops much money at all during the winter window. Without fans in the stadium they aren't generating nearly the revenue they did pre-pandemic. CFG isn't just going to flush money down the drain. They're going to bring in some young South or Central American players that they can eventually move on to Europe for a profit. Acevedo is a perfect example. The transfer fee was $2.5 million and I'm sure his salary is very low. If they can keep him here and he shows promise, maybe they sell him after the 2021 season for $4 million and make a small profit.

Honestly for CFG and making NYCFC relevant, fans in the stadium or not should not be a consideration of transfer spending in order to build a contending team to win MLS Cup.

Maybe they don't view spending money = winning an MLS Cup. Maybe their approach is "spend just enough to make the playoffs and see what happens."

Because of Giovinco? Sure. But Maxi fits that description as well, he just had a brief stop in Mexico before coming here.

Not sure if we're including Bradley and Altidore as fitting that description, but I don't think anyone here is clamoring for those kinds of signings as DPs.

I know the league has changed somewhat since 2017, but I'm not sure who would be opposed to us signing those kinds of guys, given completely dominant that team was. The idea that building an MLS Cup-winning team requires some creative scouting in no-name leagues doesn't really hold up in their case.

Altidore was a fantastic signing at the time. Now he’s old. But Giovinco and Alridore is a massive DP move. And it worked.

Look at Columbus who won this year. Their key signing was Zelarayan, who was not a “nobody” but honestly was a bit of a reclamation project from Tigres. They surrounded him with steady MLS talent and no “big star.”

You could have made a similar storyline for the 2019 team with Maxi in the Zelarayan role - not a “big star” but a solid player who found the right spot and was surrounded by MLS quality talent.

How much would a 29 year old of his caliber go for in the transfer market? Probably less than id be willing to sell for, unless he pushes for it. We already have a lot if roster rotation going on, let's keep our best player. We'll never get an equal, or even close, right back.

i mean the teams mentioned are freiburg and dusseldorf so im not really expecting that much of a transfer fee. Lokomotiv moscow i think also showed interest. the big issue seems to be the travel restrictions and not being able to see family/friends, so i feel its very possible for him to leave.
