I very much agree. As expressed elsewhere, I'd like to see us get an energetic d-mid and a creative attacking midfielder. If we presume that Lampard or Xavi is the 2nd DP, I'd like us to use the 3rd slot on a CAM.
I think we can get a destroyer without burning a DP slot. Look at what Kreis did with Beckerman, a rather unremarkable player that Kreis molded into an 8 time all star playing precisely that destroyer/quarterback role.
It also helps that the US is perhaps strongest in its production of energetic midfielders who can run tirelessly. It's the American way of play: run fast, try hard. If our d mid can do that, I suspect Kreis can chain him to his CBs tactically and leave us in decent enough shape there without making the position a cap issue.
As others have mentioned, I just don't see how we could use Xavi and Lampard together at this stage in their careers. I would put Gilardino in this poor fit category as well. We need guys who will play one and two touch and move without the ball.
There is this young American 8/10 playing at Rosenborg, but I don't know if there's much interest in having him here.
