Red Bulls are going to have a hard time siphoning away NYC-based fans at this point, regardless of any branding changes. Go back to Metros, New York United, doesn't matter. Fans have had twenty years to latch on to that team, it's hard to imagine anything winning over NYC fans now with another option in the city.
I think the only thing that will really drive people away from NYCFC - the fans who are genuinely interested and on board and excited - is building a SSS in New Jersey, Long Island or Yonkers or some other non-NYC location. Or a shitty location within NYC for that matter (Aqueduct). And in that case I don't think fans switch to Red Bulls, I think they just drop MLS entirely.
The 43,000+ in attendance last week, for the most part I'm assuming those weren't people who previously supported Red Bulls or regularly attended their games. They were soccer fans who didn't necessarily follow any MLS team. Now they have a team in New York. Take that away and they'll stop watching again. Hell I'm one of them - I will make the occasional trip to Red Bull Arena but only a few times a season normally. I have season tickets for NYCFC. But if they move the team to NJ or Long Island I'm out.

Somewhat likely scenario - Red Bull franchise folds, NYCFC after years of searching for SSS moves to Harrison NJ.
But, doesn't fit your "pole" as there would be no reason to leave NYCFC fandom, it would just be hard to get to the stadium.

Don't know why you have to include Red bull in everything? I don't think anyone is going to either go back to or defect to them in Jersey. The only thing I can think of that would make people leave NYCFC , as has been stated, is if their SSS ends up in a location as horrible as RBA.
Nobody wants to see ME dance on a pole...... believe me!!!!

Ive noticed RB have used a lot of metro history lately, i wonder if they are thinking of maybe reverting to the metrostars name.
There's no way in hell. It's just a marketing trick since we showed up. All of a sudden they remember a history they had completely ignored for 9 years because it wasn't successful at all so they didn't want to associate their energy drink to it. It's just a desperate prayer to keep people from leaving them for us.

No way will Red Bull ever go back to the Metrostars or have any more black and white on their jerseys. The ONLY reason Red Bull goes into sports with sponsoring extreme events, and buying sports teams, is to further their BRAND. AKA MARKETING. Their US Marketing Director said so as much on a HBO Real Sports piece that was done on Red Bull. So to the Red Bulls, winning isn't really top priority. Of course they want to win because winning further their marketing with tv exposure, trophy exposure etc....but make no mistake about it. Red Bull knows they spend a lot on marketing and advertising and they said as much, these teams they own and that they sponsor is advertising to them. And it is working very nicely for them according to the Real Sports piece. So no, Red Bull will never go back to the metrostars or anything close to it.
Now going back to the pole. NYCFC is New York City's team and unless that changes, I do not think fans leave.

It is ironic for me that after waiting for so many years to root for a NYC soccer team, I find myself with an imminent relocation to New Jersey. Still though, I will not root for the team if they move out of the city in a relative short amount of time since their inception, which I can see happening if the don't find a stadium location within the supposed five year plan.
I would look at how the Giants and Jets fans felt when the teams moved to Jersey. They were already an established team, rooted within the fabric of NYC, that the relocation caused a minor hiccup among the general fan base. With NYC FC, the franchise has yet to take root, so if they moved, I simply would not follow them as a die hard fan.
