MLS is catching on that it may be on to something here.

You would think that we will have (or should have?) a huge advantage if MLS indeed becomes a league where success is largely dependent upon the scout/pay/win/sell cycle. I feel great about step 1, hope we fully embrace step 2.

Add another DP slot and more of the allo $$ and this league should have a bunch of Atlanta-on-steroids teams. That will be fun.

I've seen many comparisons to Almiron on here (moreso attempts at comparison if anything) and noting the difference in the transfer fee paid. That's fine, and I get why as they are both young Paraguayans, but do we need to compare him to Almiron? What about someone like Villalba who Atlanta paid 2.25m transfer fee for? I know we all want a guy like Almiron and we should aspire to sign guys like that, but getting a Villalba-type guy is pretty great as well.

I agree, the Almiron comparisons are total nonsense with regards to any acquisition. Almiron came based on his relationship with the Atlanta coach. 99 times out of 100 players being recruited by the type of teams Almiron had going after him are headed straight to Europe. Anyone that dubs Almiron the new type of player that NYCFC and all other MLS teams should be getting on a regular basis is completely disregarding the fact that MLS is likely no where near their first choice and they have options. Ideally the league continues to increase in quality and reputation to the point that MLS is a choice destination but it's not there yet. I think your suggestion of Villalba as a reasonable measuring stick is a good one. The typical young MLS DP at this point in time will more consistently look like Villalba or Medina than Almiron. Giovinco and Almiron are both massive outliers that happened only because of very special circumstances anyone measuring everyone of NYCFCs DP signings against either is in for some considerable disappointment.

I think the league should move to 4 DPs work the fourth needing to be a young DP. Will make it easier to take chances like Medina.

I could get behind that, and it's exactly the kind of thing that other salary-capped leagues around the world already do so they could hardly argue that it's too much of a bold step to risk trying...

It doesn't feel this way to me at all. So to me, it looks like you're talking out your arse again If you wanna segment by cost then maybe the Maxi verdict weighs more heavily, but then the losses at the end of the roster don't weigh either. We don't know how much Jesus is gonna make either, so I contend that the best comps are Maxi to Johnson on my list above. Within this range our record looks pretty stellar.

Angelino and Bravo were both good signings, though. Calle was always injured, Martinez was a backup and never played, and Lopez was organizational filler. Not sure I'm buying this argument over the clear wins the front office has had in the last 12 months. With their recent rate of success, you have to give them the benefit of the doubt until we get a chance to see the player for ourselves.

How is Lopez a loss? Not a terrific player, I agree, but he was making the league minimum. For someone paid as an end of the bench player, that was a good signing.

And the vast majority of those guys were organizational filler, guys signed to fill out the roster. Of course the back end of the roster is going to suck -- Okoli was a miss, but was he really expected to be a star? Stertzer and Lopez were guys at the back of the 18, if that

The team has had a vastly better success rate, especially in the last 12 months. And they should get credit for it.

None of the players you listed were recently signed or reflected our more recent acquisition strategy. A point I pre-empted in my own post.
