Man City Discussion

New English midfield for city?

"Delph just announced that he isn't leaving Villa. So much for City's English midfield."

It was all over the news and papers, it was supposed to happen. Think he changed his mind last min and ended up embarrassing us. Perhaps he thinks he isn't good enough, missed opportunity for him.... We move on.
Sterling will be done, next couple of days. He is in advanced talks right now as I type.
I actually ended the English midfield line with a question mark, not as a statement of fact.

There's a lot of stories floating around about why Delph pulled out. The most convincing seems to be that the storm of abuse he got over social media reminding him of the promises of loyalty he made in Jan when he signed a new contract basically ate him up from the inside - unusual for a player, I admit, but there are the occasional honest sort who genuinely are motivated by love for their clubs.

I hear he failed his medical. Also, he might have not felt his talents would've warranted a spot in the starting XI.

That's another of the stories, though it seems to be the one that the fewest people believe from what I've seen. At the end of the day, there are probably only a handful of dozen people who will know the truth. We can just guess.

I'm not sure where Delph would fit in, realistically. Decent player but so were Rodwell and Sinclair. I understand the need for English players but would rather see the club going for younger players who have the potential to become genuine first-teamers than the likes of Delph.

Congrats on the Sterling signing. I hate to see talent squandered, so I hope he comes good for you.

A year ago, it would have hurt my feelings. Now, I think it's the only acceptable ending for all involved.

Technically the obviously overpaid for him but I guess since they can afford it it's not something to get caught up on. I still remember (early on in my soccer following days) Shearer moving for a then record 15 mil and it's hard for me to accept at times how insane the number are now. That aside if he can forge an partnership with Aguero anything like he had with Suarez and City will put in a much better title challenge this year than last.

The transfer fee isn't being reported fairly and many dippers think they have got £49m for him .it is actually
£44mof which 20% goes to QPR
44_8 £36m
Less another £4 to sterling in loyalty bonuses
£32 +£5m payable on success on the pitch -£1m to QPR
Total fee £36m phew

Another thing to consider with respect to the Sterling fee is that he's one of only 5-6 English players that can be a genuine first-team player for a club with meaningful ambitions to win the league and CL. You can buy a bunch of Delph-level squad players for 10m or so, but by the time you meet the homegrown quota you're paying fees and wages for a handful of players you barely use. That was the situation with Sinclair and Rodwell and it was an almost complete waste of money. At least Sterling can contribute to the squad every week, leaving aside the fact he has a good chance of becoming a truly elite player and is marketable besides.

Yea, I get ya, but I do feel that manuel would give him a chance to shine, maybe not from the start at first. To be fair he only has to be better than Fernando and Fernandinho which judging by last season won't be hard. I think he bottled it big time and thinks he isn't good enough. Fair play to him, we will never know I suppose. Would have been a good addition.

Well you should lower your offer as a penalty for backing out and wasting your time. That's what I'd do. Then again I'm can be petty and I don't run a FC.

Haha, he has signed now. Welcome aboard Fabian!
You put your left leg in, your left leg out, you talk to Tim sherwood and you turn around, that's what Delphs all about! Oohh, Delphy Delphy, oohhh Delphy Delphy.........in out in out CTID

Lol at all the people praising him for not signing with the "evil empire". Once he saw that staying at Villa wasn't going anywhere he teleported out of there.

Villa are looking like a decent bet to go down this year, besides Grealish and Agbonlahor the core of that attack is gone. Feel sorry for Micah.

I guess the last major target on the board's radar is De Bruyne, but that doesn't seem likely unless they really push the boat out. He looked great last season but not sure we need another player in that role anyway. I guess you could move on Jovetic but I'm hopeful he can stay fit this season.
