NYCFC Social Media Thread

NYCFC posted a "favorite derby moments" post and they include lots of amazing ones... except, of course, David Villa's hattrick or any other Villa moment. The erasure is real and sometimes frustrating (as Villa's goals vs RB are some of the best imo), and makes me wonder... do we think this is entirely an NYCFC-side erasure, or could it be that Villa or his team also asked the same of NYCFC? It's fascinating.

I doubt this is Villa requesting it. This is the team erasing him from its history because of the sexual harassment allegation. Frankly, it's the right thing for them to do. I still remember Villa's moments, and I agree with you that his hat trick is my favorite Derby memory, but there is no need to glorify them in a post like that.

Thankfully MLS still recognizes David Villa

I agree with keeping him minimized in certain aspects, but on field moments belong to the fans imo. I don't like removing his moments from broad tweets and videos like this.
I can agree with them not doing "happy birthday to club legend David Villa, take a look at some of his greatest moments" or "10 years ago today David Villa scored this beauty" tweets or anything that is specifically about him.

100% my opinion is what 413Blue wrote. It's crazy to not allow incredible highlights like this to be ever shown again bc of it. We don't need posts about Villa, but at least include him in compilations where the fans select responses. Or in clearly acceptable moments, like this one.

That's my opinion, anyway, and the club clearly thinks the opposite.

Yeah. I don't like pretending history did not happen because someone bad was involved. No tributes, no awards, no special mentions is fine, and sufficient. But a HRD video should include games and moments he was a part of. The history belongs to all of us: the players, club, and fans. If we learn something horrible about SJ Callens or Taty will we never show highlights of the 2021 MLS Cup? Yezhof was at the canal and it's silly to pretend otherwise.

You're right that they belong to the fans. Those moments live on YouTube, on MLS's website, and everywhere else you consume media. But he did some awful stuff while he was here, and that soiled any good he did here. I fully agree with the team that there should be no content on him in the future.

And this isn't "removing" his moments. It's not using his moments for content, interaction, and social media clout. He still lives on the team's record book.

Correct. From the words of my people, "Never Forget".

The team isn't telling you to forget what he did here. The team is telling you they won't celebrate it because of the ... other ... stuff he did while he was here. It's a shame, but they would get way more social media flak for celebrating David Villa.

I think they're calculating 200 based on MLS regular season + MLS playoffs (maybe the MLS is Back tournament too).

If we're counting all competitions Sean Johnson is at 206 and Maxi is at 223. Chanot is at 199, Callens 193, Parks 191.

He's already at $500,000, which is under a TAM/GAM player. I would bring him back at that number.

really depends how much he feels he can contribute and how much nick thinks he can contribute on the field. $500k for a super sub and mentorship is still a lot of money. though for a club legend, it might just be fine. curious what maxi wants too. but we won't find out until the off season

Yeah. I think there's a decent chance he retires at the end of the year. But if he wants to return, we've seen this year how important he still is to the attack. We still haven't found a No. 10 that can even come close to what Maxi provides, and considering our DPs are pretty locked in at this point, it would seem hard to believe we could find a suitable No. 10 this offseason if Maxi leaves.

I’m thinking Maxi Retiring and Maxi leaving are two different things. I betcha he will be hired by the club in some capacity. I’d happily see him as an assistant coach or a “club ambassador” what ever that means. He tried to move his family to SA and they came right back. I betcha he sticks around even if he isn’t playing

very good point. i think this will definitely happen. his family is at home here and he isn't picking up to move again.

Yes, I think that seems quite possible.
