It also means he rejected our offer, so we aren't getting first choices. Shocking.

nycfc offer? or more CFG offer? i still believe its more CFG assigning people to us. GVB was probably like nah ill make more money elsewhere instead of being assigned to nycfc with probably slightly more money than what he was making as an assistant.

This is a good thing. I want a manager that wants to be here, not a manager that is willing to take more money in China in a worse league. This is a really good job in a growing league -- one of the best rosters in the league, a chance to win things, in a quickly-improving league. If you don't want to be here, we'll find someone who does.

Getting rejected by GVB to stay with Pep for GVB to potentially be next in line for Man City manager - ok, makes sense

GVB rejecting NYCFC to go coach in China - oh boy, stomach punch. Did someone tell him that there is now a wage cap on foreign players there?

Dont matter if hes making the millions.

A manager will go where he feels he has the best resources to succeed while also feeling appropriately compensated. One of those two items, or both, scared him off. Each means CFG is under-providing and not willing to budge even for their 1st choice. That’s appalling.

There is no other way to spin it.

Has to be Matt or Mehdi right?

I think there is one scenario that makes the silence and delay acceptable: We had always identified GVB as option #1, and Matt Pilkington as option #2. Matt was informed of this early on, and GVB was given time to negotiate or move on while Pilkington prepared as if he would be taking over this past month.

If it's a different outside hire or a last minute internal pivot (or worse, "interim promotion"), I'm not exactly thrilled we let GVB hold us hostage for weeks.

Or even with Gio being their #1, they didn't value him as highly as he was offering himself, and decided he's not worth that sort of compensation, and even being the #1 choice, they'd prefer someone worth their compensation? Say CFG offered him X and he wanted X*2? Might not be worth it. However, we don't know what the numbers were.

That’s a very dangerous game for a company to be playing since Gio had options and walked, winning the game of chicken. No team should ever be so self-absorbed to dismiss the demands of their #1 choice if it results in a free-fall down the list. I have nothing against Pilkington, but let’s not act like he was the definitive #2 with barely a drop off from the #1..... if he was, then the saga with Gio never would have been drawn out for months as CFG would have done a quick pivot to Pilkington before Gio’s China ink ever dried. This is a disaster of epic proportions for CFG’s HR/recruiting dept.

I never know what to make of some of Ian's hints about stuff like this. He's an odd combination of honest critic/cheerleader, who also seems willing to speculate about items where I think he has limited knowledge (and is usually quite open about that) but people tend to assume he knows more.

So I think this is an informed guess, but still a guess, FWIW. Interesting thread. As usual, he's very responsive and trying to keep people engaged and positive.

I think you can take this tweet at face value: he doesn't know for sure. De Telegraaf says we made a good offer and there's no reason not to believe them, especially considering how weird it'd be if we didn't.

ugghh it is embarrassing if he chose China over us. Don't really want Pilkington or Medhi. Think I said this early but an unsexy coaching hire kills a lot of my enthusiasm for the upcoming season unless Medina is dumped and a sexy signing is made on the playing end.
