The more I read about him the more I like it. He seems to play a 4-2-3-1, which fits pretty much perfectly with our system under Dome and PV, and fits the roster like a glove. He plays attacking, pressing football which is something we've been doing for a while.

Yes he has a CFG connection, but that doesn't mean he's a bad coach. I think this hire will allow us to continue to play the same kind of game we've had for the last four seasons, which should minimize the natural disruption caused by a coaching change. That's important considering we play a competitive game in 45 days or so.

The big difference between Torrent and Deila seems to be that Dome had a lot of formational flexibility -- he'd play us in five different formations over the course of a single game and change starting formations all the time. Deila seems to keep to his system, though hard to see from some of the articles what kind of in-game adjustments he makes.
Feels like a hire in the Klopp mold. A simple system with a little bit of flexibility. Real emphasis on character, man management.

He obviously impressed them when they interviewed him. He seems to be the kind of coach with a clear vision, probably more in the mold of Vieira than Dome, who was more pragmatic.

Klopp, with an emphasis on character? So you’re saying Midas is gonna use him as his new avatar?

I don't know if I would call Dome pragmatic. If we are sticking to P's, I'd go for professorial. His desire to maintain style above system indicated to me a romantic conviction about the virtues of positional play, perhaps to the detriment of human factors.

Yeah, I meant pragmatic in terms of not sticking to one system, allowing the game and opponent to dictate exactly how he wanted his team to play while maintaining the same general sensibilities. You're probably right that it was more professional than pragmatic, but I think we're both kind of saying the same thing here.

I misread Jee at first too, but he said “professorial” not “professional”. If I’m understanding him, it’s that Dome approached it from a philosophical/textbook approach rather than a pragmatic approach - in that he created his philosophy of play and would stick to it no matter what adjusting his formation to maintain it rather than adjusting the tactics to offset the opponent.

I need more coffee.

Reading most of Jee’s posts requires a quiet room with noise canceling, plenty of coffee, a thesaurus, and a few graduate level textbooks to reference. I imagine most people he deals with at work just nod their heads, to not slow the meeting down, and are confident they’re gonna get an A+ Product in the end so why make him waste energy dumbing it down.

It does look like Ronny is going to be appointed as the next manager, so even though I have my doubts, I will be hoping he proves me wrong. His time at Celtic was strange, because without ever being convincing we won 2 leagues. I think that was more to do with the quality of the opposition than how good Celtic were. For me I do believe the club could have done a lot better than this appointment. My only positive about him is that he comes across has an honest, hardworking guy.

Haha professorial not professional. Especially not in post match lol

Report from Norway.

Interesting to hear the timetable here -- the club made contact "before Christmas," which certainly lends credence to the idea that they had another coach they wanted before having to go to Plan B.

Also, this sounds like it's as close to being done as could be without being official: "Vålerenga has realized that they are losing their head coach, and have begun the job of finding Deila's replacement." (Per google translate)

That would seem to indicate we could get an announcement as soon as tomorrow if this thing really is as far along as Norwegian media seems to think.

Explain to me how we get our best 11 on the field playing a 4-2-3-1?

Maybe Sands ready to succeed Chanot.
Maybe move Callens over as a stay-at-home LB to get Jimmy in.

Wish there was a way to get Taty in there, he and Heber played off each other really nicely in the few games they lined up together.

Between fixture congestion, injuries, and normal squad rotation, it's really not that important to figure out our absolute best XI. We have probably 13 players I'd feel exceedingly comfortable with in the XI. Whether Taty or Isi gets that last forward spot, whether Parks or Sands get that last midfield spot, whether Chanot or Sands get a DB spot, they're all probably going to get at least 15 starts, if not more.

Surely by the playoffs between player form and whatever else is going on we'll have to figure it out, but for now we have at least 13 starting caliber players with no real "wrong" answers from the coach as long as he rates the players the way we expect he should.
