NYCFC in the Media Thread - 2019

Finally went and checked the Power Rankings. They are a bit loopy at the moment.

I am certainly pleased to see us in 2nd - we are in good form and 2nd in the Suppporters' Shield by PPG.

But, why is Portland one spot behind us in 3rd? I figured they must be on some kind of run that I had missed. But no, they are on 10 points in their last 6 games - good, but hardly great.

By the way, when looking at form over the past 6 games, there are 3 teams in the league tied for first with 14 points. Can you name them? There is also a 4th team that is also unbeaten over the last 6. Can you name it?
Without looking:
Colorado and San Jose for sure.
New England, probably the team with fewer points but unbeaten. I would have to look up the last one (assuming I'm right about those 3).

ETA: Did you mean besides us? I assumed you did but now I see you didn't say so. NYCFC is definitely one of them.

As for Portland, I think the PR voters are trying to get ahead of the curve. They've done respectably well with a ton of Away games and have only 4 road games left out of 18. I do think the Rankings jumped the gun, though, not only because Portland hasn't really started piling up wins yet, but also because they still have 3 Away games in the next 6. That's better than they've had so far but not an advantage. After that, though, the Timbers have 11 Home and only 1 Away.

Yes, the 3 teams with 14 points over their last 6 games (4 wins, 2 draws) are NYCFC, San Jose and Colorado. New England is the only other unbeaten team over that stretch (12 points).

These 4 teams went a combined 2-14-8 (14 points) in their first 6 games of the season.

Ran across this radio piece today - kind of randomly. It's from last summer - part of NPR's American Anthem series, where they take an anthemic song and give the history behind it.

For this one, the song is Seven Nation Army. The piece starts with how the song became popular in European soccer, and then crossed back to the states.

The piece concludes in the NYCFC Supporter's Section, where they chant it a bit for Maxi Moralez and then say they're kind of sick of it.

I dont know if this comment belongs here, but I am seeing more NYCFC gear on non game days than ever before. I recently saw a woman with a NYCFC hat and immediately thought there must be a game but it there wasn't. Happened a couple of time this year as well, purely anecdotal but it seems that marketing or maybe even NYCFC gear retention is working.

I think its working. I saw several NYCFC backpacks at the NY Reptile Show in White Plains this past Sunday.

Which begs the question if our gear is doing well, why is that not translating to attendance or TV viewership?

TV viewership is probably poor because it's difficult to actually watch the games unless they are on ESPN or something. Even on FS1, some people don't have it. YES broadcasts are heavily dependent on Yankee stuff and people just don't want to bother with FOX GO. When it's only on Unimas/Twitter - people have no idea how to access it. Then when it's on ESPN+, people don't want to subscribe just to watch. It's a tale of too many hurdles just to watch your team play, which is just too much for the more casual fan or even the die hard fan who just isn't tech savvy enough to figure it all out.

Stadium attendance - not sure. But I would imagine it's a mix of "baseball stadium to watch soccer? pfffft preposterous!" and "they play where?"

I was at the McD's across the street before a game once and overheard some people talking. They were asking - is there a baseball game today?? and the other guy explains it's soccer and people are wearing soccer jerseys. So, even after 5 years it's not obvious to all that NYCFC is the city's soccer club and that we play at YS.

Everyone has FS1 - it's in virtually the same amount of homes as ESPN.

I understand when the games are online no one is watching, I get that. But when the games are on YES, still no one is watching. The promotion is good enough that you know which games are on where. It's obvious that for whatever reason, our games aren't "appointment viewing" like Yankees games are. Which makes sense, the Yankees are the biggest team in the world. But still, you'd like to see a way where our games are more important to watch for the fanbase.

At least for me, Spectrum Lower Manhattan, you can channel surf to get to ESPN (28) or ESPN2 (29). You have to jump to 400 to get to FS1.

My friend on Facebook posted a few profile picture wearing an NYCFC hat. I don't think he's ever been to a game. The monogram NYC is just nice.

THIS!

i mean a whole lot of people wear yankee/ mets hats for the the monogram. Why? because it represents NYC some may not even be baseball fans at all. plus the NYC for us doesnt even say soccer team it looks nice on its own too.

I have been in the store at YS the last few games looking for the monogram hat and it is NO WHERE to be found. Seems you can only get them online. They should definitely stock it in the team store. I'm sure it would continue to sell out every game.

They could probably distribute them via street vendors and other non-sport shops in the city and make crazy money. It's a sick look that people would buy just because it looks cool.

You have to jump to 400 to get to FS1.
The horror!

Also, every digital cable package right now has a "search" function into which you can simply plug "NYCFC" and find the televised games. I don't think it's about them being "difficult" to watch; I think we on this forum simply tend to WILDLY overestimate even the tiny amount of general-public interest in professional soccer in this city.

are we sure about this ? every week when you compare MLS games in ESPN and FS1 the FS1 numbers tend to be worse than ESPN's and its not like they dont put Atlanta or other big teams in FS1
