2017 Roster Discussion

If anyone truly thinks that our team has improved from last season talent wise is truly in denial. I get more bummed when I find out we miss on a target I'd rather just not know we were targeting them at all honestly.

Is the reason that our new international players aren't marked as such on our roster page because the rules don't apply prior to the roster finalization date? All the returning internationals are marked (apart from Mena, who is marked Loaned Out).

We maybe slightly improved, but we've done the absolute bare minimum to keep pace with the rest of the playoff qualifiers. Bare minimum at best.

I think we'll make two more major signings yet though.

East playoff teams from last year have actually been pretty quiet generally. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, but:

Red Bulls - No major adds and traded Dax. Presumably sitting on a lot of allocation money and cap space, though.

DC - Signed Ian Harkes, LeToux and Guillermo Ortiz

Montreal - Nothing other than Dzemali coming from Bologna at some point

Philadelphia - Bit more active with Simpson, Picault, Gooch, Wijnaldum and Medunjanin. Not dissimilar to us, though, hard to know what to make of that grab bag.

Toronto - Only real new signing is Mavinga

I think the biggest improvers in the East as of now are probably Chicago, Columbus and potentially NE if their two new CBs can fill that enormous hole from last year. Atlanta is a complete wild card. Orlando has a potential impact signing in Spector, but needs to use the Molino allocation money and was starting with a pretty screwed up roster.

So, I still would like to see more improvement, but none of the teams in the east that were good last year have really lit the world on fire relative to us.

I agree, were faster and younger compared to last year, but we have a lot of unproven talent. We need to bring in more proven vets or players that have been in MLS for a few years and knows how to prepare for the season grind.

Our team is so young that if we bring in a 27-28 year old player, they become one of the older players on our team.

Will be hard because of international spots to get 2 but I could see getting 1

When I mean 3-4-3 I was more thinking

3-2-3-2 for since home field is so narrow.

-----Villa---- Okoli

Tmac - Harrison - ???

---Ring----Pirlo

???--Chanot--???

-------GK------

AKA the live and die by the sword concept. Okoli should be very comfortable with tracking back and running his nuts off in this concept. I'm really trying to learn tactics here, so in depth critiques would be appreciated.
I don't hate it. Lots of natural triangles. Can easily overload each part of the pitch without a ton of movement. If we consider Shelton a striker or pick up somebody else, a rotation of Okoli, Shelton and Villa up front isn't too shabby. It also takes advantage of our burgeoning armada of tricky wingers / attacking midfielders (Lewis, Harrison, Camargo, Tommy, Shelton, Awuah?)

I don't know where Mata fits in this formation though. Maybe as a winger. I don't think he's all that clever up there tho, and there's no real place for an offensive wide defender. We don't have enough really solid CBs for this formation, although I think that RJ could probably do a job there. Not much depth in the double pivot positions (maybe Awuah, Pirlo, Ring).

So it's not a perfect fit, but would love to see it in action if we could find the right pieces.
